SHERON THOMAS FIDDLER

July 24, 1948 – August 15, 2017

 

Surrounded by her family, Sheron passed away at the Percy E. Moore hospital on August 15, 2017. Sheron leaves behind, to cherish her memory, her loving husband of 40 years, Percy and daughter Aleia (Jason); brother, William Jr. (Madeline), sisters Carrie, Peggy, and Elaine. As well as sister in laws Jennifer, Rhoda, Thelma, Louise, Linda and brother in law Allan. Numerous nieces and nephews.

Sheron was predeceased by her father and mother, William John and Margaret Thomas (nee Cochrane); Sisters, Thelma and Jessie; Brothers, Norman, Randy, George, Bryden and William Clarence (Bill).

Sheron was born on the Peguis First Nation and attended Residential School in Birtle and Brandon. After completing her grade 12, Sheron went on to university and completed her Bachelor of Education at the University of Manitoba. Sheron taught in Norway House and Sandy Bay First Nations and returned to Winnipeg to work at the National Indian Brotherhood and Manitoba Indian Education Center. Sheron strived to improve aboriginal education.

In 1976, Sheron returned home to work with the Peguis School Board in the development, implementation and administration of the Local Control of Indian Education. Sheron continued to work with the Peguis School Board until her retirement in August 2003. After retirement Sheron pursued and completed her Master’s Degree with the University of Phoenix.

Sheron was dedicated and passionate in her work for improving First Nations Education and continued to work with Garden Hill Education Authority, Keeseekoowenin Education Authority and Manitoba First Nation Education Resource Centre.

Sheron was very supportive and encouraging to all who knew her. She had a big heart and helped others whenever she could. She had a strong belief in the Traditional culture. She enjoyed travelling to Thief River and Warroad with friends. Happiest times were spent with her husband and daughter Aleia. For all who knew her, Aleia was her pride and joy. Sheron was very proud of her accomplishments.

Special thanks to physicians and nursing staff at Percy E. Moore hospital for the care provided.

She will be dearly remembered and sadly missed.

Cremation has taken place and a Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, August 19, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. in the Gilbart Funeral Chapel, Selkirk Manitoba. Luncheon to follow the service to follow in the Gilbart Reception Centre.
