Sherrill Arrell Obituary

Sherrill Odette Arrell (née Gurr) passed away suddenly on Sunday, April 14, 2024, at the age of 82.

Born August 6, 1941, in Hamiota, MB, Sherrill was the second of four children born to Russell and Phyllis Gurr. Sherrill grew up in Brandon, having moved there as a young girl. She enjoyed art and music her entire life and was a long-time choir member at Knox United Church. She graduated high school from St. Michael’s Academy, completed post-secondary training at Brandon Business College, and held a series of jobs in Brandon, Virden, and Winnipeg.

Sherrill married John Arrell on June 22, 1963, in Brandon. Together they raised three children. The first several years of their marriage were somewhat nomadic as they moved multiple times around Manitoba and Saskatchewan. In 1978 they settled in Brandon so they could be closer to extended family. Sherrill enjoyed gardening, sewing, quilting and knitting. She volunteered countless hours not only quilting with the Busy Hands group at Knox United Church, but also driving many of its members to and from their meetings. Like her mother before her, Sherrill gifted many of her handmade treasures to family and donated even more to needy recipients through the church and the hospital. Sherrill and John moved to Selkirk, MB in 2014 to be close to their youngest grandchildren. They were warmly welcomed as members of Selkirk United Church where Sherrill enjoyed several years singing in the choir.

Sherrill is survived by John, her loving husband of 60 years, and their children, Kent Arrell (Debbie Lewis), Tracie (Marty) Wilkinson and Jodi Arrell (Joe Stirnimann). Sherrill was a beloved Gran to Robyn, Noah, Katelynn, and Niklas, Step-Gran to Sean (Kelly), Ryan (Lisa), Andrew (Emily), and Great-Gran to Emmett, Liam, and Odin. Sherrill will be fondly remembered by her siblings, Wayne (Yolanda) Gurr, Barry (Carolyn) Gurr, Tric (Wayne) Workman, her sister-in-law, Shirley Wellman, as well as many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.

Our Wife, Mom, Sister, Auntie, Gran, and Great-Gran taught us many things through her actions and her words. She showed us that love gives us strength, humour builds bridges of connection, and family is everything. To Sherrill, time spent with those she loved was never wasted. This wonderful lady will be deeply missed by family, friends, and all who had the privilege of being touched by her kind heart, the bright twinkle in her eye and her easy laugh. She may no longer be with us physically, but we take great comfort in knowing that her light continues to shine in the ones she loved.

Our family would like to thank Dr. Anozie & Dr. Brown from Selkirk, & Dr. Liu from HSC Winnipeg.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, April 27, 2024 at 1:00 p.m. at Selkirk United Church, 202 McLean Ave, Selkirk, MB. For individuals unable to attend, the service will be streamed online at https://youtube.com/live/ls6tKHr40tU.
