ALAN JOHN SHADE

1933 – 2017

It is with deep sorrow we announce the sudden passing of our dear father and grandfather, Alan John Shade on September 28th, 2017 at the Selkirk General Hospital, at the age of 84.

Alan is now lovingly reunited with his wife of 53 years, Peggy. He will be dearly missed by his children John (Marlene), Mary (Arthur), Everett (Marlene), Margaret and Theresa; grandchildren Monica (Jason), Alan (Heather), Mieka, Angela (Jason), Michelle (Justin), Terry (Shelley), Sylina, Andrew and Jessica; extended family, close friends and pets.

Alan was born on April 19th, 1933 in Coventry, England. As a young boy his family immigrated to Canada. He proudly served in the Canadian Army from 1950-1952 and transferred to the Royal Canadian Airforce from 1952-1979. During this time he obtained a degree in Engineering, and later on his Masters. Alan met Peggy while stationed at RCAF Base Cold Lake, Alberta and won her heart on their many road trips in his ’57 Chevy. They married in June, 1958.

During his 30 years of service Alan was especially proud of his contributions to the U.S. manned space program, the Avro Arrow project, and CFB Winnipeg, where he rose to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. After leaving the military he went on to management positions at Manitoba Housing and Renewal Corp, Micro Electronics Centre, General Electric, Manitoba Research Council, and Vansco Electronics.

Dad was deeply devoted to family, faith, and helping those in need, as demonstrated by his support of his children's and grandchildren's many endeavours, and his active participation within his church and numerous charities.

Alan's passions included home renovations, mechanical repairs, camping, horse racing, reading, and family hobbies. Alan and Peggy shared fond memories of their trips to the Maritimes, Churchill, Holland, and England. Alan's love for animals brought many dogs, cats and horses into our lives. He will be missed by pets Bailey, Orange, Willow and BooBoo.

Special thanks to our church group, and neighbors Shannon and Ryan, for their friendship and support.

Funeral Mass will be held on Thursday, October 12th at 11:00 a.m. at St. Margaret's R.C. Church, 105 Little Britain Rd, Lockport.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Alan’s memory to the St. Francis Place Shelter/Soup Kitchen (Selkirk) or the Royal Aviation Museum of Western Canada.
