He was born March 24, 1952 in Gimli, MB. He was the 2nd son to Hordur and Emily (Thorkelson) Gudbjartson. He was predeceased by his parents; an infant brother John and sister Gudrun.
David was blessed with 2 children from his marriage to Ruth Kristinnson from Arborg, Chad (Kamara); Lars and Emily, Leah (Kelly); Ben and Jesse. He was so very proud to be an Afi.
David has left to mourn his passing, not only his children and grandchildren, but also his siblings, Norman (Mavis), Joanne (Ron), Daniel (Jean), Loren (Ginny), Franklin (Jo-anne), Julianna (Wayne), as well as 4 nieces and 6 nephews and 3 great nieces and 3 great nephews.
David was raised in a neighbourhood, who were really an extended family. He got his mechanical ability from his dad and his love of reading from his mom. He was a brilliant mechanic and could diagnose and fix anything. He joined the Royal Canadian Armed Forces in 1977 and served in the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry. He was a decorated veteran with medals from the United Nations – Cypress and United Nations – Middle East. He was an excellent marksman and won awards in marksmanship competitions. He also served time in Germany. He was honorably released from the armed forces in September 1986. He worked for several seasons with Freshwater Fish Marketing Corporation and Matheson Island Fish Co-op. He loved nothing better than being out north at the fish camp.
David always kept up with world affairs and loved to have a meaningful conversation about what was going on but he also loved to have a friendly chat when on his walks around town. He loved his new suite at the Icelandic River Lodge and had a great view of the Icelandic River Walking bridge. He was a huge reader and was a whiz at math! David was a natural with animals and always had a duck in the pen or a turtle in the rain barrel. Photography was a passion that he also enjoyed.
