Gertrude Walker Obituary

Gertrude Walker
May 20, 1930 - December 27, 2018

After a courageous battle with cancer and multiple health issues, God called our beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother, great great grandmother, sister, wife, auntie, sister-in law, and friend home.  Surrounded by many family members mom went to be with her Lord and Saviour to rest on Thursday, December 27, 2018 at the Grace Hospital in Winnipeg.

Mom was born at Peguis First Nation on May 20, 1930.  As a young women mom left Peguis to move to Dauphin River with dad, Bert Walker.  There they began to raise a family and later returned to Peguis to live for several years before moving to Selkirk where they remained and were part of the community.  Mom and dad were married for 50 years.  They both enjoyed working and spending time with their friends and family.  Mom and dad had many good friends all over the Interlake including Selkirk.  They worked together with dad's fishing business and were both committed to looking after their special child Angela.

Mom was heartbroken when dad passed away February 2006 followed by Angela May 2011 and daughter Olga Thomas December 1, 2018.  She was also predeceased by her grandchildren Edgar Stevenson Jr. , Desiree Walker and Rodney Walker, stepson Edward Moses O'Meara and his wife Maryanne, sisters Dina Stevenson, Roselyn Sutherland, Olga Truthwaite, Eileen Ross, brothers Ralph, Louis, Charles, Dave, and Billy Stevenson, sisters-in-law Maryanne and Shirley, brothers-in-law Albert and Fred, son-in-law Morley Murray and parents Marjorie and Ernest Stevenson.

Mom will be truly missed by all her children, grandchildren (41), great-grandchildren (68) and great-great-grandchildren (11), brother-in-law and sister-in laws and friends.  Children are William (Stella) Walker, Joanne (Doug) Stevenson, Freda (Barry) Bear, Maxine (Edgar) Stevenson, Ernest (Marie) Walker, Debbie (John) Burka, Charmaine(Jim) McIvor, Rosa Walker, Dennis (Maureen) Walker, Darryl (Kathy) Walker, sisters-in-law Elizabeth Sinclair, Vina and Evelyn Stevenson, brother-in-law Marshall Ross.

Mom and dad worked hard to provide for the children.  Their children and grandchildren were their priorities and their lives.  Mom was always cooking and cleaning, taking food to those in need and volunteering to help others.  She would make homemade bread and pies then call all the children to come pick up some baking.  Keeping in touch with her family was very important to mom.  She would make daily and weekly calls to family members to make sure everything was alright.  Mom worked with dad with his fishing business and also volunteered at the church and with the Selkirk Friendship Centre. Mom's actions were stronger then words, she loved her family and friends and she was loved.  Mom your work is done, rest.

A celebration of her life will be held on Monday, December 31, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. in the Gilbart Funeral Chapel, Selkirk, MB.

It broke our hearts to lose you,
But you did not go alone,
For part of us went with you,
The day God called you home.
Though your smile is gone forever,
And your hand we cannot touch,
We will never lose the memory,
Of one we loved so much.
Thanks for the loving years you gave us,
The happy times we shared,
We all pray that when you left us,
You knew how much we cared.
Our family chain is broken,
And nothing seems the same,
But as God calls us one by one,
The chain will link again.
