Harold Allan Prokop

It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of Harold Allan Prokop, better known as Harry or “H”. Harry passed away peacefully surrounded by loving family and cherished friends at the Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg on Saturday September 16, 2017.

Harry is survived by his wife of 47 years, Diane (nee Allen); their son, Scotty and his wife, Chantal; siblings Larry (Pat), Bill (Beryl), and Kim Legary (Brian), and their families; brothers-in-law, Stan (Sandy), Ernie (Marilyn), and Terry (Irene), and their families. He will be sadly missed by all his family, many close friends, and by his beloved grand-dogs; Lady, Willie and Bacon.

Harry is predeceased by his parents, Harold & Rose (nee Kapusta) Prokop, and in-laws; George & Cecilia (nee Barker) Allen.

Harry was born at St. Joseph Hospital, Winnipeg, at 3:00 a.m. on August 30, 1946. He grew up in the North End of Winnipeg, surrounded by his family and lifelong friends. There he also met the love of his life, Diane Allen.

In the late 60’s with his buddy, Sig Sobczak, by his side, Harry set out to California to be an automobile bodyman and build hot rods. They only made it as far as Calgary where his brother Bill and family were living at the time. “H” and Sig took up residence in Calgary, living the bachelor life.  It was there that Harry became skilled in the true art of Kung Fu. He was trained by a 10th degree black belt, Master Simon.

In time, Harry moved back to Winnipeg where he married Diane, and their son Scotty was born.

In the late 70’s, Harry and his new family moved back to Calgary to advance his employment with Western Smallwares. In the early 80’s he transferred back to Winnipeg to be the General Manager of Core-Mark Distributors. With his father-in-law, George’s, encouragement, Harry set out to build his family a home in St. Andrews. That would be his final home. Harry had a celebrated and successful business career until he retired in 2007.

Harry lived his life as a unique individual, with his own set of rules.

He enjoyed a special interest in building award-winning motorcycles and custom cars. He loved going to car races that took him from Gimli, to North Dakota, to Bonneville. He also enjoyed wacking golf balls around on the links, getting lost in the woods hunting, and fishing, which he rarely did alone. Harry was instrumental in the renovation of Kim and Brian’s cottage at Jessica Lake.  “H” had a passion for art, which he proudly displayed on his body, and in his wood working skills.  But most of all Harry loved the company of his family and friends, who considered him essential in making a good time even better.  Harry was devoted to his family and friends. He was a jack of all trades who never hesitated in lending a hand to someone or helping to find a solution to their problems.

The family would like to extend a sincere thank-you to the staff at the Health Sciences Centre, for their care and compassion.

A life led to the fullest but cut too short.

The family will be hosting a private service at a later date. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Winnipeg Humane Society.
