Mary Boitson Obituary

Mary Boitson (Welchinski)

January 22, 1933-June 24, 2018

Peacefully on June 24 at the age of 85, mom passed away surrounded by her family at the Gimli Community Health Centre.

Mom leaves to mourn her daughters Karen and Barbara (Joe); grandchildren Robert (Lynn), Cherie (Random), Wendy, Krystle (Ryan), Christopher (Paige), and Wesley (Rose); great grandchildren Madison, Alyssa, Kylie, Cayden, Aleigha, Austin, Dawn, Ainsleigh, Graysen, and Hailie; sister Anne, brothers Stanley and Walter (Evelyn); extended family Wendy, Doug, TJ, Carly, Gunner and Brynlee; and numerous nieces, nephews, and dear friends. She was predeceased by her husband Steve, parents John and Katie Welchinski, and in laws Nicholas and Michalena Boitson.

Mom was born in Fraserwood and grew up on a farm in the Fraserwood area. She met dad and they were married on November 2, 1957. They moved to the Komarno area in 1961 where mom resided until her passing.

Mom loved her family and was known for her amazing cooking, especially for Baba’s perogies. Family and friends were all welcome for the big family meals at Baba’s house. Ukrainian Christmas and Easter dinners are memories that her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren will cherish forever.

Mom loved her yard. She loved to cut grass and would spend hours out on her riding mower.

One of her favourite things to do was sit out on her deck with her flyswatter. She enjoyed watching the kids play, the cars go by, and counting all the motorcycles.

Mom took pride in her garden. Her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren learned all they know about gardening from her. We can only hope that we will be as good at it as she was. When she was no longer able to plant the garden herself, she became the “overseer” of the planting, making sure the rows were straight and were just the right distance apart. She even offered yearly advice to her neighbour on which way the potatoes should go.

She spent years taking care of others during her time in Home Care. Her kind and caring nature continued long past her retirement day as she was always there for her family and friends.

We are grateful to have had such an amazing person to teach, guide, and love us all.

A celebration of Mary’s life will be held on Wednesday, July 4 at 11:00 a.m. at her residence 4 miles west  of #8 on 229 # 14146

The family would like to thank Dr. R.C. Patel for his years of care, and thank all the nurses and staff at the Gimli Hospital for their care and compassion.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in mom’s name to Cancer Care or Canadian Blood Services.
