Myrtle Helgason

Myrtle Helgason (nee Hirst)

Our mother, Myrtle Helgason (Hirst) passed away suddenly on November 16, 2017 at the Rehab Hospital, Winnipeg following surgery.

It is with profound gratitude and peace we release her into the loving arms of our Dad. He predeceased her in 2007 and her journey has been difficult without him. While her loss was sudden and unexpected, we take comfort knowing that they are together again for all eternity.

Mom is survived by her children Pat (Bill), Gerry (Lisa) and Kelly (Arlene). Her pride and joy were her grandchildren Leslie (Brett), Lindsay (Mike), Kalee, Erin (Adam) and Morgan Victor. Her littlest elskans, her great-grandchildren Erik, Kenzie and Isabella gave her great joy.

Also left to mourn her passing are sisters Joann (Ronnie), Joan (Arnold), Blythe (Glen), Hazel (Bob), Beatrice and Allan, Marlene (Durwood) and Laurel (Jerry). She is also survived by Wally and Betty Helgason and Wilfred and Dora Helgason.

Mom was the eldest daughter of Gordon and Lorely Hirst, a family of 10 children. Her life would take her from Riverton, to Arnes, to Lac du Bonnet and finally to Selkirk where she would make our home for over 5 decades. Her door was always open to company with a meal, coffee and cake, or even a nice cold one.

Our mother was known for her hospitality, impeccable meals, love of cards, jokes and generally for being a friend to all.

A celebration of Myrtle’s life will be held on Friday, November 24, 2017 at 1:00 p.m. in the Gilbart Funeral Chapel, Selkirk.

If friends so desire they may make a donation in Mom’s name to the Marine Museum of Manitoba, Box 7 Selkirk, MB R1A 2A8.

We would like to extend our loving thanks to all who were a friend to our Mom, her family near and far, her Legion family, and the caring staff at the Rehab Hospital who attended her final hours.

You will be forever missed, never forgotten and dearly loved.

Goda nott Elskan
