Walter Henkewich Obituary

Walter Henkewich

With heavy hearts we announce the peaceful passing of our beloved husband, father and grandfather, Walter Henkewich, while surrounded by his loving family on December 29th, 2019 at the age of 81 years.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 56 years, Violet; daughters Cheryl (Kevin), Shelly (Stewart), Susan (Jason) and Noreen (Shawn) along with eight beautiful grandchildren; Quintin, Brendan, Riley, Logan, Aaron, Renae, Will and Reese; two step-granddaughters, Kelly and Sophie Leonard, sisters Mary Bush and Elizabeth Bodnar as well as numerous extended family and friends.

Walter was born on March 22, 1938, in Libau, MB to Fred and Dora Henkewich, the youngest of three children and only son.  As the baby of the family, he was doted on throughout his childhood by his loving sisters Mary and Liz who he adored.

As a young man, Walter left Libau to take a job in the big city of Winnipeg at Safeway Electric. Throughout his lifetime, he pursued many different career ventures but his entrepreneurial spirit led him to invest in local real estate and the opening of Selkirk’s famous Snak Shak.  He met the love of his life, Violet, while working as an orderly at the Selkirk Mental Health Center.  They married on August 29th, 1963 and raised 4 daughters and lived their entire lives in Selkirk.

Our dad was also an Electrician by trade, and one of his last jobs before he retired was driving school bus for the Lord Selkirk School Division where he was beloved by students, many of who were the children of his own kids’ peers and friends.

Our humble hero was a private man who never needed recognition for his life’s achievements.  His joys were golfing with passion, taking trips south with friends, partaking in happy hour at the Legion with his buddies, puttering around the yard and most of all, his daily visits with his grandchildren.

Our hearts are heavy with sadness but we are comforted in knowing that his struggles are over and he will now make a place for all of us to gather again one day.  The family is forever grateful to the staff at the Tudor House for their compassionate care they gave to dad.

A Memorial Mass will be held on Friday, January 3, 2020 at 1:00 p.m. at the Notre Dame Roman Catholic Church in Selkirk, Manitoba.
