Allen Alfred Cox Obituary

Allen Alfred Cox

With great sadness and heavy hearts, we announce the passing of our dear brother, father, grandfather and uncle Allen Alfred Cox.

He is survived by his son Matthew, grandson Conner, brothers Ron and Ken and their families and auntie Mary Leverence. He was predeceased by his parents Alfred and Catherine.

Allen was born on May 19, 1948. He was the first of 3 sons born to Alfred and Catherine. Allen was always a gentle soul who was loving and caring. Being respectful, well-mannered and courteous to whomever he met was something he excelled at. As a brother he always displayed the ability to say and do the right thing.

He graduated from Miles Mac Collegiate, went on to St. Paul’s College, then went to university in Ottawa. He worked as a counselor with young people in times of need. He also worked counselling men in times of them being incarcerated.  Allen lived and worked in various parts of Canada – Ontario, B.C. and Manitoba.

He enjoyed the outdoors at the cottage at White Lake, fishing and camping. He was a fly fishermen and made his own flies. He was left handed, an excellent artist belonging to a local Art Club, painting many great paintings. I think his most favorite pastime was listening to music. Jazz being his favorite. Allen played the trumpet for many years and for awhile, he played in the Al Sprintz Jazz Band at the Club Morrocco in Winnipeg. He enjoyed all types and styles of music, Jazz, Blues, Classical. Allen and I met Louis Armstrong (Satchmo) after a concert our Dad took us to. Allen also enjoyed various Blues guys including Buddy Guy, etc.

I don’t think Allen had a million and one friends, the ones he had were true and genuine. His friend Tom Prymak was that kind of guy. They back-packed through Europe, the Middle East and Afghanistan in the 60’s. Tom was Allen’s greatest friend right till the end. Thank you Tom for being there for Allen for all those years.

I would like to thank the staff and management of Red River Place during his time of need since 2017 while living with dementia, Gilbart Funeral Home for a job well done, Father Gerald of Notre Dame Roman Catholic Church in Selkirk who provided spiritual comfort and provided Allen a road map upon departure.

A private family graveside service will take place at a later date.
