Andrew Bosko Obituary

Andrew Bosko

It is with heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Andrew (Andy) Bosko, our beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and uncle at Red River Personal Care Home on February 15, 2020.

Andy was born August 7, 1929, in East Selkirk, Manitoba to Annie and Anthony Bosko. He is survived by his wife, Julia; his children Peggy (Gary), Terry, Patty (Melvin), Andrea (Pat), Heather (Mike), and Jonathan (Corey), fifteen grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. Andy also leaves to mourn his passing four brothers, one sister, as well as many beloved in-laws, nieces and nephews. Andy was predeceased by his mother Annie, father Anthony and three brothers.

Andy was the first born of nine children. He learned from his father and grandfather how to work the land and raise farm animals. Recently, he spoke of how he cultivated the land by walking and using horses. He also told of how he had to make the five mile walk on the railway tracks to school and in the winter would carry a heated stone in order to stay warm. Andy went to school until he was in Grade Four. From there he worked on the farm.

When Andy got older, he would drive to Red Lake, Ontario, where he would sell vegetables and work as a camp cook. After he married Julia, they began a family. Together they had a mixed grain and animal farm, raising cattle, pigs and chickens and selling eggs. Andy also did shift work at the Manitoba Rolling Mills for fifteen years, while raising his family of six children with Julia.

Dad was one of the smartest and most versatile people around. His list of many talents included: farmer, veterinarian, mechanic, accountant, welder, plumber, electrician, carpenter, wine maker, bee keeper, just to name a few. Up until last Fall, Dad could be seen cutting the grass, visiting his neighbors on his quad, watering tomatoes, driving his tractor, cutting branches, picking raspberries, feeding the birds and playing and winning checkers with his grandchildren. Dad loved to visit and tell stories. He would often go to town and have many conversations at the grocery store with old friends and new. Dad’s greatest joy was having the whole family around to celebrate birthdays, anniversaries and holidays. He will be lovingly missed by his two dogs, Ginger and Sandy.

Andy’s family would like to thank the staff at Red River Personal Care Home, Selkirk Regional Health Center and St. Boniface Hospital for the care and compassion they gave Andy.

A memorial service was held on Wednesday, February 19, 2020 at 11:00 at Gilbart Funeral Home in Selkirk. A private family interment will be held at a future date.
