Obituary

Andrew Joseph Smaha

June 21, 1937 – December 2, 2024

Our beloved Andy passed peacefully at Gimli Hospital in the early morning of December 2, with his wife by his side.

The eldest of Anton and Barbara (deceased), he was predeceased by his first wife Eleanor (the mother of his much loved daughters), brothers Tony and David and son-in-law Grant.

He will be deeply missed by Keitha, his wife of 50 years, daughters Sandra and Leslie, sister Sylvia (Ness), sister-in-law Nettie and nieces and nephews.

Born and raised in Winnipeg, Andy worked for Manitoba Telephone System for 35 years, retiring in 1992. Upon my retirement a few years later, we moved permanently to our cottage on Sandy Hook Golf Course. The city boy soon was in love with the simple and quiet country life – enjoying golfing, surrounded by nature, identifying and feeding the many new birds. He was proud of his home.

Andy loved music, especially blue grass, country and gospel. He loved singing harmony, playing guitar – enjoying jam sessions at Gimli Horizon 55 Plus Centre. An avid sports guy, he played fast ball with ACWA in the Union League and slo-pitch with the Dawgs, and hockey in the Old Timers League. He was a great Nascar fan.

Andy had a great sense of humor. He was kind, polite, outgoing and had the gift of gab. Sadly he had dementia in the last few years.

Cremation has taken place and no formal service will be held, as per his wishes.

The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to the nurses and staff at Gimli and Eriksdale Hospitals for their compassionate and loving care.

If you wish, please feel free to donate to the Children’s Hospital or a charity of your choice.

Andy – you will forever remain in our hearts and thoughts. Rest in peace hon.
