Angela (Nellie) Unik Obituary

Angela (Nellie) Unik

It is with broken hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, Angela Unik on January 17, 2022. Left to cherish wonderful memories are daughters Nancy (Chris) Anderson, and Sandra Unik; grandchildren Samantha (Bryar) Boulette, Bill (Rachel Ladd) Anderson, Greg (Ashley Braun) Anderson; great-grandchildren Theo, Emily, Rayne-Lee, Darian, and Remi; sisters-in-law Loretta Lewis, Myrna Unik, Anne Gowryluk, Heather Unik; brother-in-law Lawrence (Doreen) Unik; many wonderful nieces & nephews, special friend Pauline Banash, and beloved “older daughter” Shirley Shaley.

Mom was predeceased by parents Michael & Josephine Lewis; sister Sophie (Mike) Wasnie; brothers Cal (Vonnie), Frank (Emma), Louie (Angela), and Ted;  in-laws Dan & Mary Unik, John, Stanley, Danny, Peter Unik, Mary (Julius) Eliass, Nellie (Ken) Flaherty, Bill Gowryluk; niece Karen Eliass, nephews Randy & Greg Lewis, Dennis Wasnie, George Pubben, & Rod Gowryluk.

Mom was born in Selkirk on November 6, 1926 and after a short stay in Ottawa came home, fell in love, and married the only man she truly loved, Bill Unik. Mom had several great jobs over the years even owning a corner store in Selkirk with Dad. When it was decided to start a family Mom gave up working outside the home to be a full-time Mom to Nancy and then Sandra. Unfortunately, it was shortly thereafter that Dad passed away at 38 years old. It was then that Mom started working at “The Town Office” and continued to work there till retirement 35 years later. Mom also worked for Rose Marie Catering on weekends for many years, always bringing home a nice Sunday dinner from the extra food at Saturday’s function.

The most important thing in Mom’s life was always her girls, staying up nights to sew us clothing, keeping a beautiful home and roof over our heads, growing a huge garden, cooking delicious food and raising us right. Mom was also very strong in her faith being a lifelong member of what is now Notre Dame Church. Over the years Mom was on many committees, taught catechism, sat on council, was in the church choir from age 8 to 88, and was a member of the local CWL.

We’d like to thank the great staff on Medicine at the Selkirk General; the wonderful staff at Betel Home; and John from Gilbart Funeral Home for all you’ve done.

Cremation has taken place, a private family burial will take place in spring.

It was a very long journey Mom, it’s time to rest. Till we meet again.

Condolences may be left on her tribute wall at www.gilbartfuneralhome.com.
