Arnold (Arnie) Goodman Obituary

B. A. (Hons.)  LLB

November 11 1949 - January 21 2024

Proverbs 27:9 (VOICE) "The heart is delighted by the fragrance of oil and sweet perfumes, and in just the same way, the soul is sweetened by the wise counsel of a friend."

It is with heavy hearts that the Goodman family announces Arnold's peaceful passing at the Selkirk Regional Health Centre. The eldest of seven children, Arnold was born and raised in Selkirk. Over the course of his career, he resided in Ontario (Ottawa); Manitoba (Winnipeg, Hamiota, Flin Flon); and Saskatchewan (Regina, Saskatoon; Star City, Regina, Watrous). He retired in Selkirk about a decade ago.

Arnold was predeceased by: maternal grandparents, Agust and Stella Amundson; paternal grandparents, Vilhjalmar and Johanna Goodman; parents, John Richard Goodman (2009) and Audrey Adalbjorg Goodman (2014); mother of his daughters, Shirley Ann Evelyn Goodman (Taylor) (2014); youngest brother, Paul Gudni Goodman (2010); and sister-in-law, Karen Lynn Goodman (2021). Also predeceasing Arnold were his Aunt Laufey Davis (nee Goodman), uncles Magnus, Thor, Kjartan, Siggi, and Lawrence Goodman; uncles Gilbert and Clifford Amundson; cousins Marvin Goodman, Burke Amundson, Sheila Storjord, Donna Davis, and David Lockhart.

Arnold is survived by his two beloved daughters Victoria Roxanne Goodman (partner Anastasia Sparvier); Charity Amanda Goodman, (partner Dan Pilon and sons Julien and Gabriel Pilon); and Shirley’s sister Cheryl Taylor-Kashton (husband Dave Kashton).

He leaves behind two brothers: Captain Wynford Goodman and children Jean Giles (partner Wes) – Jacob, Kimberly, Sarah; Curtis Goodman (wife Samantha) – Tia, Brooke and fiancé Dylan Kutsch; David Goodman (partner Sandy Warnock) – Aidan; and Timothy Goodman (partner Emelie Comeault) – Blake, Joe, Alexander, Atticus; and brother Gunnar Goodman (wife Pansy) and their children – Jade, Jasmine (husband Cameron Wood), Thor, Magna.

Arnold leaves behind three sisters and their families: Janie Goodman-Hygaard (husband Danny Hygaard) and their daughter Aynsley (partner William Kuta); Alexa Okrainec (husband Bruce); Joy Wozney (husband Bryan) and their children Joshua Wozney (partner Indianna Mullan) – Sydney; and Danielle Shachtay (husband Ryan) – Emerie.

Arnold is survived by his aunt Heather Lockhart and also by Paul’s daughter, Caley Goodman (partner Brandon Shields Schurko).

Close childhood friends acknowledging Arnold’s passing include Grant and Stuart Swanson, Ed Slyker (his best man), and Roger Belanger (close neighbour). Also missing him are people in the extended Goodman, Amundson, Lockhart, and Davis families, among others.

In his youth, Arnold worked at Booth Fisheries in the summer-where his ‘Afi’ Gunnar Johnson, Uncle Lawrence-the boss, Uncle Siggi, and dad worked-as a shipper. Oh those colorful stories brother Arn would share about his work experiences on the dock at Selkirk. Summers also meant trips to Gull Harbour by the lake with the family, travelling on the ferry to Hecla Island, and visiting with the Jones family. Long rides on dusty roads and lots of mosquitoes weren't Arnold's favorites! Swimming at the Selkirk Park pool with close friends was fun when our family wasn't at the family cottage where our Icelandic ancestors spent their time. Grandparents Gusti and Stella grew up on Hecla Island, Gusti working in the fishing industry close to the Gull Harbour dock.

Arnold excelled in writing, debating, and piano in his early life, winning numerous scholastic and talent awards. He thoroughly enjoyed time at Knox Church Presbyteens Youth group, his trip to Expo '67, classic cars and magazines. He owned an old antique car and truck that were in the Selkirk parade years ago. As a student he managed a paper route on Clandeboye. He had great memories of a big trip to California with Paul and vacationing in the American Midwest with family. In his latter years, Arn took an interest in films and the film industry.

Arnold graduated from the University of Manitoba with an honours Arts degree in English literature. He completed his postsecondary studies at Robson Hall (UM - Law). He scored well on exams with minimal effort. Scholarships and bursaries plus summer work funded his university education. Oh those days living in residence at the University of Manitoba! During his life, Arnold practiced law in various areas, primarily corporate law. He took great pride in his work for Canada Mortgage and Housing, which involved the construction of the Portage Place Mall in downtown Winnipeg in 1987.

Rest in Peace Arnold - father brother uncle great-uncle cousin and dear nephew of Heather Lockhart (Amundson) - friend to many.

"For whether we live, we live unto the LORD; if we die, we die for the LORD; whether we live therefore, or die, we are the LORD's." Romans 14:8 KJV
