Obituary

Bert (Geurt Bartus) Vanderhart

With great sadness, we announce the passing of Bert (Geurt Bartus) Vanderhart on August 28, 2023 in Petersfield, Manitoba at the age of 74.

Bert is predeceased by his siblings Engelina, Herman, Cor, and Aart, and his parents Barteld and Janna.

Bert's life will continue to loom large in the minds of his children Tessa (James) and Jesse (Carly), his wife Connie, his beloved niece and nephew Robin (Jason) and Jason (Evelyn) and his grandnephews and nieces. He will be remembered as a great friend by so many, especially Penny and Evan, Dale, and neighbours Henri and Katie.

Bert was born in the Netherlands on July 11, 1949. His family immigrated to Canada, eventually settling in Selkirk, Manitoba. There, he and his brothers developed a deep appreciation for Manitoba’s waterways, particularly the slough, Netley and Wavey creeks — where he could pass a perfect day swimming or fishing with a cold beer in hand.

Bert’s work at the Selkirk Mill and his decades at Manitoba Hydro introduced him to countless buddies all across the province, including Gillam, Kelsey, Grand Rapids and Pointe du Bois. He was proud to have never taken a sick day, leaving a year of paid sick time before his retirement officially began.

A celebration of Bert’s life will be held at the creek at a later date; a private family interment will take place.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Bert’s memory to Save Netley Marsh.
