Obituary

Bryon Douglas Batchelor

With heavy hearts and deep gratitude for a life well lived, we announce the passing of, Bryon Batchelor, a beloved Husband, Dad, Bakka, and Friend.

Bryon passed away on December 30th, 2025, at the Selkirk hospital after a brief illness.  He will be deeply missed by his wife, Hélène Batchelor (nee Péreux).  He leaves behind his children, Blair (fiancée Carrie and her children) and Ali (Jon Goodspeed). His legacy lives on through his grandchildren, Hunter, Tessa, Noah, Ben and Bennett. He also remains in the hearts of Mia (Andrew) and many extended family members; sister-in-law Cheryl Batchelor, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends who became family. He was predeceased by his parents, Norman Batchelor and Margaret Batchelor (nee Gustafson) and his siblings Carol Dundas and Rick Batchelor.

Bryon was born on August 27th, 1948, and grew up in East Kildonan. He served in the military for 13 years before transferring to the RCMP and moving to Winnipeg to be closer to family. Upon leaving the military, Bryon and Hélène raised their family in St. Vital, keeping busy chauffeuring to kids’ activities and volunteering in the community. Upon retirement they built a home and moved to the Gimli area, where they met many friends and became very involved in their community.  Bryon loved to curl and golf and shared the love of both sports with younger generations, first by helping with the junior’s program at the curling rink and sharing his love of golf with his grandchildren. Golf was never just a game for him; it was a chance to connect, laugh, and enjoy the outdoors.

Dad never really retired; upon his move to Gimli, he and his red truck became a fixture at Links at the Lake, first as a marshal and over the past many years working in the pro shop.  It became a second home to him, and he appreciated all the friendships he made with staff and golfers alike.

Along with his good friend, Dave LeBlanc, Dad enjoyed season tickets to the Jets and Bombers.  Ever the loyal fans, they made the trek back and forth from Gimli, sharing lots of stories along the way.

He will be remembered as a devoted friend, a loving husband and father and a supportive Bakka. He had a way of making you feel welcome and valued just by being present. His life was marked not by grand gestures, but by consistency, service, generosity, and love.

Though he will be deeply missed, his legacy lives on in the family he adored, the community he served, and the many people he met along the way. Even through his hospitalization over his final 5 weeks, Bryon continued to lead with love, gratitude and putting his family first. He simply wanted to make sure we were alright and that he shared all his love with us.  We are forever grateful for the time we had with him and will carry his words and loving testimonies with us always.

The family is grateful for the caring staff that has helped along the way. Everyone we met along this journey, at St. Boniface Hospital as well as at the Selkirk Hospital, have been so kind, helpful and caring.  In lieu of flowers, and if desired, donations can be made to Homes for Heroes Foundation or Cancer Care.

Celebration of life will be held on Monday, January 12, 2026 from 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. at the Johnson Hall (Waterfront Centre) Gimli, MB.
