Charlie Race

Charles George Race

May 27, 1954 - September 2, 2023

Charles was born on May 27, 1954, a premature baby weighing only 2 pounds who received skin grafts from mom. He was not expected to live. He came home in a shoe box with cotton batten for clothes and was kept on the oven door for warmth. Mom had to feed him with an eye dropper, with no bottle nipple small enough at that time.

Growing up in a family of 7 children, 3 girls and 4 boys, with Charlie being the eldest of the boys. A very busy family filled with love, and consequences if you were bad. It was a childhood of learning to love and care for each other while working. Together with his dad and brothers they built the family home in Great Falls. Many pranks and laughter was shared while doing this work and other chores. Charles had a special bond with TV before he could crawl. Mom said he was happiest when she put him in front of one. Charles also fell in love with reading and happily consumed many books, especially science fiction. Cooking was also a time when he was particularly happy, especially if he could feed someone and send them home loaded with his home cooked meals, movies or anything else you might mention you liked.

Throughout his life, Charlie (which he preferred to be called) was a very conscientious and caring worker. Working at a variety of jobs including construction, Manitou Lodge (hotel) filling in for front desk, mostly doing night shift which included security, keeping the coal furnace going (shoveling coal) and maintenance. This started Charlie on his love of working nights. Charlie worked at the Selkirk Mental Health Centre for 37 years. There he was liked by staff and patients alike. Bringing lots of home cooked meals in and sharing his vast collection of DVDs with everyone. Camping at Red Rock Camp with staff and patients was also a favourite time for him. The world is a lesser place for our loss of this amazing man, with his golden heart, generous ability to love and help everyone. Charlie will be missed by all who knew him.
