Christine Firman Obituary

December 15, 1951 - February 27, 2024

It is with great sadness, we announce the passing of Christine Firman, wife, mother, and grandmother after a long battle with MS.   Christine was the youngest of six daughters fondly remembered as the “The Balcaen Girls”.  She was predeceased by her parents Mary and Edward Balcaen, sister Doreen Lalonde, and faithful black lab Duchess.

Left to share loving memories of Christine are husband (of 50 years) Bob, son Stephen (Nadine), daughter Maegan (Michael), and three grandkids, Ella, Danika, and (little man) Andrew, along with her (grand puppy) Jax.  She is also survived by her sisters Alice Vukets, Marylin Goulet, Marie Reid, Margaret Reid (Angus).

Christine spent her childhood growing up in the West End of Winnipeg .  She attended St Mary’s Academy and then on to the University of Manitoba where she earned her Bachelor of Arts Degree.   Christine had a great way with people.  Her charm, understanding, friendliness, and empathy for others led her to a thirty year career with Sears, Credit Union Central, and finally as Vice President of Financial Services Training with Rice Financial.

More important to Christine than her career was her family.  She along side with Bob, raised their two kids to be strong minded, independent and empathetic young adults.  Christine expanded her role as matriarch to the family by establishing a loving bond with the three grandkids.  Their connection was and will always remain very special.

Christine was not only a mother and grandmother to our kids, but also found time to revive a baby squirrel that was rescued from a fire (named Smoky), raised two rabbits that had differing opinions who was king pin ( Zeke and Chewy), and finally, deal with the playful antics of our black lab Duchess.  Christine later became labelled as the “treat lady” by the families latest addition…the chocolate lab Jax.

While raising a family and travelling with her work, Christine put her creative talents on display in the beautiful homes she created.  Her homes were both tasteful in design, and warmth, but also meant to be lived in.  Everyone that entered her homes were made welcome and treated like family.  That’s who Christine really was.  She always wore a smile, while hiding her pain, spoke kindly of everyone, and always treated people with respect.  Christine was determined throughout her thirty year battle with MS never to be defined by her condition.  She was so brave and so courageous and was an inspiration to so many.  Christine’s final days were filled with music, stories, and laughter.  She was surrounded and comforted by her family as she passed.

We will always “Love you to the moon and back”. Rest in peace gramma, your battle is over.

The Family would like to thank the exceptional care Christine received at the Selkirk Regional Health Centre.

Christine, being who she was, did not want a funeral service, but instead asked that you take a moment and reflect on a memory of her that was special to you.

In lieu of flowers and/or a dollar donation, Christine has asked that people give a more precious gift, your time.  Volunteer, help someone that needs respect and your kindness.
