Dean Shumka Obituary

Nicholas Dean Shumka

Dean passed away peacefully on April 14, 2026 after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

Born in Keewatin, Ontario to Nicholas and Irene Shumka, Dean had many adventures growing up with his three brothers and sister, who liked to joke, she had the luxury of a bedroom all to herself. It was also in Keewatin at just 15 years old, that Dean met the love of his life, Terry, who spent her summers visiting her grandmother’s cottage. Their connection grew into a lifelong partnership and together they built a beautiful life in Kenora, raising their two sons, Jason and Kyle.

Dean had a deep love for Lake of the Woods, where countless family memories were made. Summers were spent boating, fishing and many camping trips.

A mechanic by trade, Dean had a remarkable ability to fix just about anything. His hands-on nature and ability to figure things out meant his family always knew they could turn to him for help and support.

The family moved to St. Andrews, Manitoba, when Dean began his career with CP Rail in Winnipeg. He worked with them for 18 years before retiring in 2014. In retirement, Dean and Terry enjoyed travelling together including Las Vegas, Hawaii and Cuba which was a favorite destination of his.

Dean will be remembered for his dry sense of humor, his quiet wisdom and his seemingly endless knowledge about everything. Over the past few years, he faced many health challenges with strength and determination. Throughout it all, Terry remained by his side, caring for him and ensuring he was able to remain at home until he passed.

Dean leaves behind his wife Terry, his sons Jason (Karlie) and Kyle and his grandchildren Morgan, Alexa, Nicholas and Jordyn. He will be also deeply missed by his brothers Perry (Roberta), Paul (Laurie), sister Lesley (Peter) Fox, brother-in-law Garth (Karen) Collings, as well as many nieces and nephews. Dean was predeceased by his mom, dad, brother Alan, nephews Mark and Aaron Shumka.

In keeping with Dean’s wishes, cremation has taken place and no formal services will be held.
