Denis Larabie Obituary

Denis Larabie

Peacefully with family by his side, on Wednesday, January 1, 2020, at the Gimli Community Health Centre, Denis Larabie, aged 63 years of Winnipeg Beach, MB passed away.

Denis was predeceased by his grandparents, Lena and Victor Johnson, his father Sylvio, his nephew Brent Lupyrypa and brother-in-law Ted Herron. Denis is lovingly remembered by his mother Victoria Larabie, sisters Annelise (Glenn) and Darlene, his children Billy (Jane), Cameron, and Melyssa (Dan), and his grandchildren Izzebelle and Maverick along with Auntie Jeanne-D’arc Kenney (Pierre) and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

Denis grew up on his grandparents’ farm and spent the remainder of his life tending the homestead. This became home base for him and his children. His grandchildren now enjoy spending time at Afi’s. Denis spent his earlier years working for the Village of Dunnottar before moving on to Evergreen School Division. Denis worked as a bus driver and custodian for 29 years and served on the Executive Team for 16 years with CUPE Local 3164. Denis was loved by many of the children he had the pleasure to watch grow. He enjoyed camping and fishing along with the frequent adventures in Hecla, Norris Lake and Nutimik Lake.

Originally diagnosed with cancer in 2016, Denis was determined to beat that beast! Over the next few years he went through many appointments, but always remained optimistic with a sarcastic attitude. Holidays continued to be a time of feast and fancy as Denis spent weeks preparing food and dainties. This past Christmas, he again outdid himself with the extravagant meal shared with his family and friends. Denis always had an open door, a pot of coffee on and treats on the table.

Our heartfelt thanks to Julie Kumps at Gimli CancerCare and the nursing staff of Gimli Hospital. In keeping with his wishes, cremation has taken place and no formal service will be held. Flowers gratefully declined, Denis would like donations made to the Gimli District Health Auxillary, Box 398 Gimli, MB R0C3B0, for a new rollaway cot/portable bed “so family members don’t sleep on the floor.”
