Donovan Couture Obituary

DONOVAN ANTHONY COUTURE

Following a long and well-lived life, our beloved brother, uncle and friend passed away on May 1, 2019 at the age of 102.

Donovan was predeceased by his parents Theodore and Helena Couture, sister Catherine Skehar and brother-in-law Bill, brother Lawrence Couture and sister-in-law Doris and brother-in-law Eric Hjartarson. He is survived by his sister Lorraine Hjartarson, nephew Fred Hjartarson and nieces Joyce Skehar and Joan Friesen (Alan) and their children, all of Winnipeg.

Donovan was born on July 23, 1916 in Selkirk, Manitoba. He grew up in Clandeboye, and joined the RCAF during WWII. He was stationed in the provinces of Quebec and Nova Scotia and worked on aircraft maintenance during the war years. Upon his return home to Clandeboye, he worked several jobs before starting his career at the Rural Municipality of St. Andrews in road maintenance and construction. He retired in 1981 and was well respected by his fellow workers.

Donovan spent his life at the same location in the Clandeboye area next to Muckle Creek. He built his own home in the 1950s with the help of his family. Donovan enjoyed gardening and was always generous in sharing his bounty of vegetables and flowers to those who visited. Deer and rodents were a bane of his garden and the source of many entertaining conversations discussing strategies to deter their destruction. He always had a dog at his side and in later years, a cat (Puddy).

Donovan was predeceased by his beloved companion, Dorothy Gagnon. He enjoyed his many road trips with her throughout U.S.A. and Canada. Upon her illness, he was at her side continuously.

The family, cannot thank enough, Charles Gagnon for the kindness and companionship Charles has given to Donovan....the numerous cribbage games and awarding of trophies, car rides to the countryside and dinners at The Royal Fork Buffet and Barney Gargles.

We also want to express our gratitude to the staff at Red River Place in Selkirk for their compassion and exceptional care of Donovan over the past 3+ years.

A private family graveside service was held at the St. George's Anglican Cemetery, Wakefield, MB.
