Doreen Hocaluk Obituary

DOREEN ELIZABETH HOCALUK

Peacefully, on Friday, March 20, 2020, at the St. Boniface Hospital, Doreen Hocaluk, aged 75 years of Scanterbury, Manitoba, beloved wife of the late Lawrence passed away.

She was predeceased by her first born daughter Geraldine in 2001 and her loving husband of 56 years, Lawrence on August 6, 2018.

Left to mourn her passing are her children Allen (Charlene), Lawrence Jr.,  Jason (Sylvia)  several nieces, nephews , grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Doreen’s surviving siblings are brother Jim Bear and Jean Watkins.

Doreen was a teacher’s assistant for several years at the Scanterbury school  and she retired there.  She also enjoyed helping young children and took in Foster children. She was known in the community as a loving and caring person.  Many people in the community remember her as their favorite teacher’s aide.  Her granddaughter, Shannon Settee fondly remembers her grandmother Doreen going for rides and being on the road giving her a nick name “road packer”. Doreen also really enjoyed going for rides and restaurant dining.

In the past, Doreen also enjoyed picking berries, fishing, skinning muskrats and plucking ducks when her sons hunted. Doreen and her husband gave their life to the Lord. They travelled and attended many Bible camp meetings where they met several friends who also served the Lord.  Pastor Ray and Elsie Settee from the Selkirk Aboriginal Church were special friends that always enjoyed visiting and praying together with Doreen and her late husband.  Pastor Cornish was also a close friend to Doreen and Lawrence Hocaluk.

Doreen had BON Homecare and she had a special homemaker that she always requested  Miranda Carver.   They enjoyed long talks and often were caught laughing and joking around.  Miranda would spend extra time with Doreen as they shared a special bond. Doreen also spent her last Christmas with Miranda. We would like to thank Miranda for her love and affection to Doreen in her last days and also the BON Homecare . We would also like to thank Dr. Prematilake for his care.   Doreen you will be truly missed.

In compliance with the provincial guidelines regarding COVID-19 and the current state of affairs, a small graveside service will be held at 4:00 p.m. in the St. Philip’s Anglican Churchyard Cemetery on Thursday, March 26, 2020 with Pastor Cornish officiating. Her pallbearers - Kenny Bear, David Boulton, Brad Sinclair, Robert Stove, Larry Boulton, Farrel Desjarlais.

Donations in her memory can be made to CancerCare Manitoba.

Until we meet again

Those special memories of you will always bring a smile.

If only I could have you back for just a little while.

Then we could sit and talk again, just like we used to do.

You always meant so very much and always will too.

The fact that you’re no longer here will always cause me pain,

But you’re forever in my heart until we meet again.

This poem was selected by Shannon Settee.
