Edward Miller Obituary

Edward Ludwic Miller

February 29th, 1936 – August 17th, 2019

It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Ed Miller on August 17th, 2019.

Dad was born a leap year baby on February 29th, 1936 in Winnipeg, Manitoba to Ludwic and Nellie Miller. As a young child, he was given the nickname “Sonny” by his mom and dad and they referred to him by that name until their passing when dad was in his 60’s. He grew up in Point Douglas, Winnipeg along with his sister Dorothy. The family eventually settling on St. Johns Ave, where he met his best friend Brian Scott. They remained lifelong friends until Brian’s passing several years ago. He attended Norquay School, Isaac Newton and St. Johns Tec. As a youngster, dad began his working career selling newspapers in front of the old Eaton’s building, where he saved enough money to eventually buy his first car. He excelled in basketball and had quite the distinguished career in high school, winning many city championships. Several years ago, he and his high school team were inducted into the Manitoba basketball hall of fame. In 1960, he met June Skrybalo, and they were married on June 10th, 1961 and remained married until her passing only two months ago. Soon after he was married, he began his real career in sales at Westinghouse Electric and eventually moved to London Life where he sold life insurance until his retirement in 1992 at age of 55. Mom and dad bought their first house on Inkster Blvd. where they welcomed there first son, Glenn in 1964 and Douglas in 1966. They moved to Garden City and eventually West St. Paul. Once retirement came, he and mom wintered in Florida and they eventually moved to Sandy Hook where he lived until his passing. In retirement, dad enjoyed wood working, helping his boys with projects around the house such as finishing basements, wiring garages and most importantly sharing his opinions on everything whether it was needed or not. He was also mom’s chauffeur where he took her to all her orchestra practices, concerts, shopping and flea markets.

Dad will be missed by his sons Glenn (Theresa), grandchildren Emily and Kris and Douglas (Pam), grandchildren Brody and Ben. Brody and Ben spent a lot of time with Grandpa at the cottage and his passing leaves a void in their lives.

The family would like to thank the Gimli RCMP and Paramedic team for trying to help dad in his final moments. Their compassion is greatly appreciated.

A memorial service will be held at the Winnipeg Beach Legion, 20 Hamilton Avenue, Winnipeg Beach, Manitoba on August 30th, 2019 at 1:00 PM.

In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to Cancer Care Manitoba, the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba, or a charity of one’s choice.

Rest in peace Dad... and give mom a hug for us.
