Obituary

Ernie Thomas

It is with saddened, heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our Ernie, on July 23, 2025 at Pine Falls Hospital, with his wife Caroline of twenty six years by his side, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Ernie is survived by his wife Caroline; step-daughter Christina; step-sons Michael (Sherrie) and Garrett (Jennifer); granddaughter Elle; sisters Judy (Earl) and Colleen (Walter); brother Bruce; nephews Vince, Sheldon (Natina), Daniel and Steve.

Ernie was predeceased by mother Alma Rose; father Roland; brothers Carl, Lyle, Barry and Dennis; sisters-in-law Laverne and Pearl.

Ernie was born in Selkirk and raised in Grand Marais, MB. When Ernie was 10 years old he started working at Andersons Garage, changing tires, batteries and keeping the garage clean. At 16 years old he left to go work in Sioux Narrows as an Auto Mechanic, then on boat motors. He then went to Hamilton and welded box cars. This is where is passion for welding came from. Ernie always said family is the most important thing in life. But his biggest passion was being a fitter welder for 50 years, some with Purvis Navcon and his own business and many, many other companies.

Ernie was known for his big heart, loving ways and especially his music talents of guitar playing, fiddle, mouth organ, spoons and comb. He was also well known for his curling abilities, just prior to his passing he won a men’s curling trophy.

Little man with the biggest heart, his loving ways and his little jig.

Celebration of life will be held on Saturday, August 23, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. in the Gilbart Funeral Chapel, Selkirk, MB.
