Ethan Cruz Fiddler
Eagle Who Dances with Fire
September 29th, 2008 – October 22nd, 2025
It is with deeply broken hearts that we announce the tragic passing of our son, brother, grandchild, nephew, and cousin Ethan.
Ethan leaves to mourn his parents Luke and Jen, his little sister Lila, his grandparents Perry and Lisa McMurchy, Lorie Fiddler, and Lary Fiddler, his aunts and uncles Candice (Andrew), Andrew (Alana), Will (Christina), and Kat (Clay), his great grandmother Leona Hacking, his great-great uncle Joe, his big cousin Seth and his little cousins Joshua, Benji, Vienna, Meredith, Malcolm, Charley, Rhiannon, and Celina. Ethan also leaves to mourn his many other cousins, aunts and uncles and friends. Ethan was predeceased by his Grandma Dien, Grandma Isabel, Godmother Bonnie, Uncle Mark, mentors Steve Lawrence and Kurt Fey and numerous other family members.
Ethan was born in Selkirk, Manitoba. He was raised in Selkirk and St. Andrews where he went to Robert Smith School, Ecole Selkirk Junior High, and “The Comp.” Ethan spoke very highly of all his teachers, school staff, and his bus driver. Ethan went in every sport offered to him and excelled at everything he tried. Ethan then found basketball many years ago and fell in love with the sport. He loved to be every team’s character player where he brought laughter, spirit, and camaraderie. He loved his coaches and teammates, and he loved to win.
Nothing meant more to Ethan than his family. He looked forward to their annual trips to Hecla, family gatherings, dinners, parties, and special events. Ethan had a great ability to connect with everyone in the room. He forged special relationships with all family members with inside jokes, nicknames, and shared interests.
Ethan cherished all his friendships. His fierce loyalty made everyone who knew him, love him. He was the kind of friend who showed up when it mattered most, the first to offer a hand, share a laugh, or lend an ear when someone was struggling. Ethan had a way of making his friends feel seen and valued, never judging, always encouraging. His sense of humour could brighten even the hardest days, and his kindness drew people in wherever he went.
Ethan loved sports, music, playing pranks, and having a good old bonfire. Ethan also deeply cherished his Indigenous culture. He also took great pride in his physical health and fitness working out in his basement and going to the gym. To keep Ethan close as we miss him, we will continue to blast the tunes, light the fire, cheer at all the games, pump weights, have a smudge and share stories of love and laughter in his memory.
Our family would like to send our deepest gratitude to the Selkirk first responders and the staff at Health Science Centre SICU for their care and compassion in the days and weeks following this tragedy. Your kindness will never be forgotten by our family.
Ethan’s celebration of life will be held on Sunday, November 2nd at 2:00 p.m. at the Lord Selkirk Regional Comprehensive Secondary School at 221 Mercy Street in Selkirk. Interment to be held at a later date.
