George Thrale Obituary

George Albert Thrale

It is with heavy hearts that we announce that George Albert Thrale, age 81, passed away peacefully on January 24, 2024 at the Selkirk Regional Health Centre, surrounded by his family.

George will be dearly missed by his beloved wife Darlene; his daughters, Cyndy (Barry), Lorena (Bob), and Theresa (Bill); his grandchildren: Brittany (Brenden), Breanna, Austin (Larissa), Dayna, Jorja, Scott (Carena), Shawn, Mike (Haleigh), and Michelle (Anthony); his 7 great-grandchildren with 1 on the way; and his siblings: Bob (Elaine), Rick (Shirley), Roger (Louise), Jeff (Janine), Carol (Gord), sister-in-law Edith (Tony) and brother-in-law Tom.

He is predeceased by his parents Albert (Tim) and Lorena (June) Thrale, his in-laws Walter and Janet Scoular, and sister-in-law Cynthia.

George was born on May 16, 1942 in Miniota, MB. He grew up on a farm with his family in Cardale, MB. He had no shortage of adventures in his lifetime, having lived in several locations in Northern Canada while he was working as a meteorologist. He worked for Manitoba Hydro for 34 years, until his retirement. George recently celebrated 60 years of marriage with his wife and lifelong partner Darlene Thrale on January 11, 2024. They were married in Fort Smith, NWT in 1964.

George was very fond of the outdoors and would often spend his days golfing or fishing. Among many hobbies, he was an avid reader with a large collection of books and was also a gifted writer.

George will be remembered for his strength and courage, as he was awarded a Medal of Bravery from the Governor General of Canada for rescuing a young girl, Tammy, from a fire that broke out in Selkirk, Manitoba in 1984.

As a man of great faith, George devoted his life to Jesus Christ, serving as an Elder in the Cross Roads Church for many years, and occasionally preaching his beautifully written sermons to the congregation.

He was a loyal and dependable husband, a strong father who set an amazing example for his children, a fun papa and great-grandfather with a wonderful sense of humor, and he will forever be in our hearts.

George’s family would like to thank the hardworking and caring staff at the Selkirk Regional Health Centre.

Cremation has taken place and a celebration of his life will be held on Wednesday, January 31, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. in the Gilbart Funeral Chapel in Selkirk, Manitoba.

The service will be livestreamed and can be viewed via the following link
