Gudlaugur “Laugi” Melsted

Gudlaugur “Laugi” Melsted passed away peacefully at the Gimli Hospital on Monday, June 1, 2026, surrounded by his family. 

Laugi was born in Arnes, Manitoba, in 1938 to Lina and Gudlaugur Melsted. He was the eldest son in a family of ten siblings.

Laugi met his loving wife, Betty, while working at BC Packers in Gimli, Manitoba. They married in 1962 and together built a life rooted in family, hard work, and community.

In addition to his wife, Betty, he leaves behind his five children: Eleanor (Walter) Chwartacki, Dennis, Kathy (Dave) Ayotte, Kris (Jo-Anne), and Jeff (Carla). He was also blessed with seven grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren, all of whom brought him immense pride and joy.

A lifelong resident of Arnes, Laugi dedicated much of his life to farming. He proudly purchased an interest in the family dairy farm alongside his father and worked tirelessly to maintain it. Later, he began a career with Seagram's, where he worked for 30 years while continuing to operate the dairy farm. His strong work ethic, determination, and commitment to providing for his family were evident throughout his life.

Following his retirement in 2000, gardening became Laugi’s true passion. He spent countless hours tending to his garden and took great pride in sharing his harvest with friends and family. His generosity reflected the kind of man he was—selfless, hardworking, and compassionate.

Those who knew Laugi will remember his tenacity, his willingness to lend a helping hand, his warm smile, and his quick wit. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.

A private celebration of life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or the Arnes Lutheran Cemetery.
