Obituary

Halldora Thordise Smith (nee Palson)

July 30, 1934 – May 24, 2023

Peacefully, surrounded by the LOVE of her family, we regretfully announce the passing of our Mom, Grandma and Granny ‘D’, Dora.  She is gone, but will never be forgotten.

Left to cherish her memory is her son Lorne (Susan), daughter Janice, grandson Raymond (Jenny), granddaughter Tabby (Brian), and great grandchildren Mackenzie, Raymond, Myla, Tori and Will; along with her brother John (Kathy) and sister Fay (Richard); sister and brother in-laws Sandy, Donna, Francine (Doug), Louise (Mike), Alan (Betty), Don (Martha); as well as many nieces, nephews and good friends.  She was predeceased by her loving husband Raymond, her parents, Gunnar and Anna, brothers, Wallace, Fred, Gunnar (Lorraine), Victor and Vincent; sisters Lillian (Fred), Gay (Norman) and Joy.

Dora grew up in Arnes, MB.  She worked on the family farm and helped care for her brothers and sisters.  She married the love of her life, Raymond, in April, 1955.  She spent many seasons as a cook at the fish stations and later managed the Eaton’s Catalogue Store in Gimli.  Dora was devoted to her family fishing business where she worked many long, countless hours alongside her family.  Her favourite pastime was to take meticulous care of her flowers.  She loved family trips to Redditt, Ontario to visit and spend time with family.  Annual summer trips to the Morris Stampede with her grandchildren were always a highlight of the summer.  She was very proud to be named Granny ‘D,’ by her great grandchildren.  Her eyes always lit up when she was surrounded by them.  Family was her treasure.

Heartfelt thanks to the staff at Gimli Betel, Gimli Hospital and HSC.  At Dora’s request, cremation has taken place and a private family service will be held at a later date.

“The world changes from year to year, our lives from day to day, but the love and memory of you, shall never fade away.”
