Irene Elizabeth Couture

July 19th, 1936- January 21, 2026

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Irene Couture (nee Duguid), who passed away peacefully on Wednesday morning at the Selkirk Betel Home at the age of 89.

Irene was born and raised in Selkirk, Manitoba, on July 19, 1936, the youngest of five children. She was a beloved wife, sister, mother, nan, auntie, and friend, and will be remembered for her kindness, warmth, and infectious laughter.

She is lovingly remembered by her husband, Edward Couture; her children, Bob (Janet), Michele (Ron), and Terry; and her grandchildren, Rob (Sarah), Wesley, Kyle, Nicole (Justin), Corey, and Kristin. She was also a proud great-nan to Emma, Chelsea, Jaxon, and Brady. Irene was predeceased by her parents, Arthur and Isabella; her brothers, Arthur, Gordon, and Bruce; her sister, Margaret; and her youngest daughter, Jo-Anne.

For over 30 years, Irene worked as a cook at the Selkirk Mental Hospital, where she cared for others the same way she did her family, through good food, kindness, and dedication. She took great pride in her work.  To know Irene was to love her. She was an incredible baker famous for her cookies, buns, and carrot cake and a wonderful cook. She and Ed cherished their weekly A&W dinner dates, a tradition that brought her great joy.

Irene loved watching sports, especially curling, enjoyed long chats over a cup of coffee, and had a laugh so big it made everyone around her laugh too. Her greatest achievement and proudest joy in life was her family and the loving home she built.

She will be forever missed and continue to live on in our memories.

The family would like to extend their sincere gratitude to the staff of the Selkirk Betel Home for the compassionate and exceptional care they provided to Irene during her final two years.

In accordance with her wishes, there will be no funeral service. Those who wish may donate in Irene’s memory to Dementia Research through the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba.
