John Benson Orvis
It is with great sadness we announce the passing of John Benson Orvis, on Thursday, July 29, 2025 at the Selkirk Regional Health Centre, at 52 years of age.
Left to mourn his passing is his wife Penny Thomas; mother Lori (Lorraine) Cooke; father Ross Orvis (Mary); mother-in-law Donna Thomas; 2 daughters Candra and Evelynn; his Nana poo Marlene Cooke; he was papa to Tiffany and Abigail; step-father to Breanne (Shayla), Jerred (Chantel) and Ryan Spence. John also leaves to mourn his special uncle Dwight Cooke; sisters and brothers in-law; many other aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
John was predeceased by his grandfather Kelly (Kelvin) Cooke; grandparents Ben and Eileen Orvis and father-in-law Harry Thomas.
John was born on December 20, 1972 in Selkirk, MB. John attended Ruth Hooker School, Selkirk Junior High and the Lord Selkirk Comp.
During his younger years, John had odd jobs which included delivering papers, Grand Beach Provincial Park, Franks Pizza and he worked on the boats.
John obtained his grade 12 in 1993. He then left Selkirk, MB to start a career in the oil fields. John did this for 25 years. His advancements within the rigging profession moved him up from entry level positions to Red Seal Certification, making him a Rig Technician and supervising a drilling crew. John left the oil fields and obtained his Class 1 license he worked for Mel Stuart and George Walker.
John loved his family and friends dearly but his cars were his passion and love. Wherever he was you could see the big guy and hear his hearty laugh. If he wasn’t making fun of you, he was making up a nickname for you.
He will be remembered as a generous, down to earth, supportive and loving husband, dad, son, papa and friend.
A heartfelt thank you to the dialysis units in Selkirk, Pine Falls, Winnipeg and Brandon.
In keeping with his wishes, cremation has taken place and a Celebration of his life will be held on Thursday, August 7, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. in the Gilbart Funeral Chapel, Selkirk, MB. Interment will take place at a later date. Luncheon to follow the service in the Gilbart Reception Centre.
