Joseph Oliver Sigrid DeLaronde
December 2, 1936 – July 16, 2025
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Joseph Oliver Sigrid DeLaronde, who passed away peacefully on July 16, 2025, in Selkirk, Manitoba, at the age of 88.
Joe was born December 2, 1936, on Hecla Island, MB, where he spent his early childhood. At the age of 10, he moved with his family to Selkirk, where his love for music — especially the steel guitar — began to flourish. Though he took lessons to learn how to read music, Joe had a remarkable natural talent and could play beautifully by ear.
By the age of 16, Joe’s musical career had taken off. Driven by passion and ambition, he moved west to Alberta and BC to pursue his dream. His gift for music and his dedication to his craft left a lasting impression on those who heard him play, and earned him the nickname “The Big Steel Man”. Joe was not only a gifted musician but also a creative soul. He was known for building steel guitars out of anything he could find — including a skateboard, and even a piece of driftwood, known as the beaver log — a testament to his ingenuity and deep love for music.
Later, Joe moved to Churchill, MB where he built a life rooted in hard work and dedication to his family. He held a variety of jobs to support his loved ones, most notably working for the National Harbour Board, the Churchill Grain Elevator and driving for the Churchill Taxi Service — proudly behind the wheel of car #29. He later worked for the federal government 'playing' with weather balloons and rockets at the Churchill Rocket Research Range - every boys dream. The job eventually moved him back south to Gimli, MB where he later retired.
After retiring, with more time on his hands, Joseph returned to his first love: performing. A true showman at heart, he once again took to the stage, sharing his music and joy with others, just as he had in his youth.
In his final years, Joe resided at Extendicare Red River Place in Selkirk, where he was surrounded by many new friends. The staff became an extension of his family. His boisterous laugh echoed through the halls, and he was an enthusiastic participant in all the activities. The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the staff for their unwavering compassion and care, especially during his final hours.
Joseph was predeceased by his parents, Joseph and Sylvia DeLaronde, by his beloved wives, Millie (née Bolton) and Lucy (née Hermanson), stepson Tommy Hermanson and grandson Siggi. He is survived by his sister, Helen Walker; his sons, Joey and Darrell (Val); and his stepchildren, Sandy, Linda, Cynthia (Robert) and daughter-in-law Sharon. He also leaves behind numerous nieces, nephews, grandchildren and great-grandchildren who will remember him with love and admiration.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Thursday, July 31, 2025, at 1:00-4:00 PM at Gilbart Funeral Home (309 Eveline St., Selkirk, MB). The family warmly invites guests to share their fond memories and stories during lunch and refreshments.
