Katherine (Kay) Mikolash Obituary

Katherine Mikolash (nee Kuchera)

December 10, 1925 - March 30, 2022

It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of our dear mother, grandmother and great-grandmother at the Selkirk Regional Health Centre at the age of 96 years.

Kay is survived by her devoted children Jim (Christine), Leonard (Valda), Jane (Gary), Cindy (Ray), Kathy (Gary), Tim (Jacqueline) and Kim (Dean). She is also survived by her eight beloved grandchildren; Lisa, Robert, Lindsay, David, Robin, Jordan, Riley and Annika as well as her nine great-grandchildren; Alex, Colin, Belle, Lizzy, Emily, Rowan, Orin, Emma and Natalie. Kay was predeceased by her husband Leon and son Douglas.

Mom was the youngest of eleven children, born in Komarno, MB on the family homestead to her immigrant parents, John and Anna Kuchera. Although she was the youngest of her family, she throughout her life, always had the biggest heart. Mom was an incredibly strong and very hard-working dedicated individual who helped provide for her family to ensure we never went without.

Mom was a very devoted mother and her family was greatly devoted to her. Church was always a very big part of Mom’s life and identity, her beliefs and values continue to shape the way we live today. At our family home in East Selkirk, on any weekend, you could drive by and find several cars in the driveway. There was always an extra plate at their table for family and friends who dropped in. She will be sadly missed by all.

In her later years, Mom lived at the Knights Center, where she enjoyed sharing coffee, puzzles and bingo with her many friends.

We would like to extend our gratitude to the healthcare workers who helped her to remain independently at home in her own apartment for many years, the nursing staff and rec workers at Betel Nursing Home who cared for Mom these past two years, and the ambulance, ER, and Medicine Unit staff at the Selkirk Regional Health Centre during Mom’s last days.

“Into your hands Lord I commend my spirit”  Psalm 31:5
