Obituary

Kathryn Hannah Mackay

October 18th 1927 – August 28th 2025

Kathryn Hannah Mackay, aged 97, passed away peacefully on August 28th, 2025 in Selkirk, MB.

She was predeceased by the love of her life James, her daughter Deborah Itterman and son Jeffrey MacKay and her siblings Ralph Betteridge, Evonne Curtis, Iris Alderson and Paul Betteridge.

Left to remember her life are her children David MacKay and Dennis MacKay (Heleen), Grandchildren James Thorkelson, Jessica McGill (Linton), Jason Itterman (Kyla), Craig MacKay, Carson MacKay and Leslie Kretai and her Great Grandchildren Coral, Sparrow, Kieran, Isla, Freya, Amelia, Lili and Ethan.  Also her sister Nancy Sutherland (Skip).

Kathryn grew up on the family farm in southern Ontario.  At the age of 17, she left to go to Toronto to work as a secretary at a radio factory.  She later met and married the love of her life Jim and began the process of raising 4 children.  They moved around for a time following Jim’s work as an Aircraft Maintenance Engineer with Air Canada, at times living in Montreal, Seffner, Florida and finally Winnipeg.  They lived in Charleswood for a number of years before finally settling in Lockport, Manitoba.  Summers were spent at the family cabin near Pointe du Bois, while winter respites were spent in Barbados. Sadly, she lost Jim in 1987 to ALS and transitioned into caring for her growing gaggle of grandchildren.  She loved spending time in her garden and doing her crosswords and puzzles.  She also held a lifelong love of reading non-fiction, living great journeys and expeditions through the eyes of others.

Per her request, there will be no funeral service.  There will be a private family interment at a later date.
