Obituary

Kurtis Dwight Fey

September 18, 1980 - December 10, 2024

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the untimely and sudden passing of Kurt Fey on December 10, 2024, at the age of 44. Kurt leaves behind his wife Sarah (nee Quintero), his children, Elizabeth, Matthew (Claire), and Isabelle, parents Debbie and Darrell Fey, sister Sabrina Govier (Russell), in-laws Ernie and Janet Quintero, sisters-in-law Chrissy Carson (Grant), Chelsea Kolev and nieces and nephews Kensi, Zoey, Carter, Ava, Reid and Erik.

Kurt was born and raised in Selkirk, Manitoba. Throughout high school, Kurt played volleyball and basketball, and years later, after graduating from “the Comp,” he started his journey coaching the Selkirk Royals high school basketball team. Whether he was head or assistant coach, he went into each game with a quiet optimism and always found time to work with the players to improve upon their strengths to help better the team. His son Matthew was lucky enough to be one of these players throughout his high school years. Although he never coached Isy, he was her biggest supporter, always in the stands cheering her and the team on and being Coach Dad. In addition to his family, Kurt leaves behind many close lifelong friends. His family and friends will remember his great sense of humor and laugh. Kurt had such an easygoing, gentle personality and took the time to truly listen. He always managed to find the positive in many situations.

He started his career with the Manitoba Government (highways department - MIT). After graduating from Red River College he went on to work closely with the winter roads projects before moving into a successful career with Manitoba Hydro. His highlights included working on the Keeyask project and most recently as the Forestry Section Head. He was proud of the work friendships he made in his career, many spanning years.

Kurt enjoyed spending time with his family; this included the annual Folk Festival weekend and many camping trips. He counted down the days to the annual weekly cabin rental in St. Laurent, Manitoba. This was his happy place, sitting on the deck in the morning with a cup of coffee, listening for birds, or watching the gorgeous sunsets at the end of the day.

His hobbies were vast—from golfing, fishing, swimming in the backyard, perfecting his brisket on the smoker, trying new recipes, or cheering on the Green Bay Packers; he found joy in so much. Our annual Boxing Day crib tournament won’t be the same.

The families of Kurt are so grateful for the outpouring of support and shared memories. His absence has created a void that cannot be filled; his unwavering love and support to us all is something that will be missed beyond measure.

Cremation has taken place, and a celebration of Kurt’s life will be held at 11:00 a.m. in the Gilbart Funeral Home, Selkirk, on Saturday, December 21, 2024. Interment to follow at a later date.
