Lloyd Gunderson
October 25, 1937 - August 29, 2025
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our dear dad, grandpa and papa, Lloyd Gunderson, on August 29, 2025 at Tudor House personal care home.
Lloyd (dad, grandpa, papa) will be dearly missed by his children David Gunderson, Craig (Joanne) Fiebelkorn and Nancy Fiebelkorn, as well as his grandkids Brianne (Tyler), Carly (Owen), Jenny (Scott) and Danny (Brooke). He will also be missed by his siblings Donna (Ron), Dennis (Judy), Murray, his in-laws Linda, Bev, Sissel and Ron and many nieces and nephews.
Lloyd was predeceased by his wife Iris in 1976 and more recently by his wife Patricia in 2025, also by parents Clarence and Laura; sister Esther and brother-in-law Victor; brother Donald and sister-in-law Irene; sister Carol and brothers Carter, Raye and Edward (Sonny).
Lloyd was born on October 25, 1937 on his dad’s homestead, Sec 16-Twp 1-Range 11 in Piney, Manitoba. Piney always held a special place in his heart, with at least one road trip going there every summer. He and Pat bought a small farmhouse there that they loved for many years and enjoyed having family out to visit. The grandkids have great memories of visiting Piney with grandpa/papa and nanny. Lloyd’s grandkids were always his greatest joy. He loved hearing about what they were doing, their jobs, their future plans, and giving them unsolicited advice. Especially in his later years, a visit from them was always so special.
Lloyd attended school in Piney and moved to Toronto in 1956 - he always said it was very eye opening for a kid from Piney! In Toronto he attended George Brown college and Western Technical school. He entered the Electrical Apprenticeship program and obtained his Electrical Journeyman License. Lloyd was a great electrician and handyman and always loved lending a hand to a family member, friend or neighbour who needed help with a project, big or small.
Lloyd met Iris Peddle while in Toronto and they married in October 1958, with son David being born in 1966. They moved back to Manitoba in 1970 to raise their family, and Lloyd spent his career working at the Lord Selkirk School Division for 30 years, retiring as Maintenance Supervisor.
Lloyd loved being a part of the community in Selkirk. He was a member of the Selkirk Fire Department for 21 years of active service. He made great lifelong friends as a member of the fire department. In addition, Lloyd took great pride in being a member of the Masonic Order and a 32 degree Scottish Rite Mason. He was also a past patron of the Eastern Star. Lloyd was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, branch #42, Selkirk, Manitoba. Here he held office on the Executive as Poppy Chairman and House Chairman and was a member of the Over 60 club.
Lloyd was an avid hunter, enjoying many trips with David or with friends to hunt deer, partridge and grouse during the fall. He loved to eat a deer steak or sausage, in addition to other favourites such as lefse, Jiggs dinner and Rullupylsa. He was always a helping hand and expert slicer to Pat or Pat’s mom in making dill pickles, sauerkraut and beet pickles.
Lloyd met Pat in 1977 and they married in 2003. Together they loved their home on Dorchester avenue where many family meals were enjoyed in the screened-in porch, looking out at their beautiful garden. They spent many years traveling in winter to their trailer in Edinburg, Texas and had great trips together to Hawaii, Mexico as well as a Caribbean cruise. But above all else they loved a road trip into the country to check out the farmers’ fields, enjoy the sunshine and hopefully watch a train passing along the way. Lloyd and Pat loved each other until the end, and died only a month apart.
The family would like to extend our gratitude to the staff at Tudor House, Maple North unit, who cared for Lloyd with love and respect, especially after Pat’s passing. And a special thank you to Stacy, who went above and beyond to keep Lloyd connected to us through his phone. She and all the staff there are very special caregivers.
As per Lloyd’s wishes, a private family service has already been held with Lloyd’s ashes being interred at the Lutheran cemetery in Selkirk. In lieu of flowers, we kindly ask that donations be made in Lloyd’s name to Tudor House personal care home in Selkirk.
