Obituary

Loretta Lewis (nee Skabar)

March 9, 1934 - November 26, 2024

Surrounded by her loving family, Loretta Lewis passed away peacefully on Tuesday, November 26, 2024 at the age of 90 at the Selkirk Regional Health Centre.

She will be lovingly remembered by her son Ted Lewis (Val) and daughter Valerie Langrill (David) as well as her grandchildren T.J. (Laura), Sherry (Ben), Sandy (Rick), Gord (Jesse), Kim (Justin), Shannon (Brad), Jarrod (Vanessa), Kylie (James), Aimee (Jordan), Jordan and seventeen great grandchildren whom she adored. To the great grandchildren she was called great Grandma except for Valerie’s grandchildren who named and called her Lovey Lovey.

She will also be missed terribly by her sister Margie Trupish, and many in-laws, nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband Ted, son Greg, her parents Jacob and Ann Skabar, brothers Bill Skabar (Helen), Edward Skabar (Zelma), sister Marion Williams (George) and brother-in-law Victor Trupish.

Loretta was born in Elphinstone, MB but moved to Winnipeg at an early age. She met the love of her life Ted when she was 16, married when she was 18 and then started their family having three children, Ted, Val and Greg. They built their home together on Strathnaver Avenue in Selkirk and lived there for all of their married life of 61 years. After Ted’s passing Loretta resided at the Knights Centre and more recently at the Betel Nursing Home. The family appreciated the exceptional care from her Healthcare Aides from Homecare and staff from Betel.

Loretta left school early to start doing secretarial work to help support the family. Some of her places of employment were Montreal Trust, Checkerboard Realty, and finally Permanent Trust where she supervised the secretarial staff for Manitoba and Saskatchewan. After many years Loretta wanted to spend more time with family and started working for the Lord Selkirk School Division, however her final and most rewarding career was as a Healthcare Aide for Homecare. Her ability to speak Ukrainian and her loving, caring nature helped her to connect with clients and she would quickly become just like family inspiring her to continue working into her late seventies!

Her greatest source of pride were her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. In early years Sunday suppers were a family tradition with her still receiving frequent family visits to this day.

Thank you to Father Gerald Langevin for his visits and the comfort they provided.

A special thank you for the care Loretta received at the Selkirk Regional Hospital and for her short stay at the Betel Nursing Home.

Cremation has taken place and a family gathering will be held at a later date.
