Lorne Monkman Obituary

LORNE RICHARD MONKMAN

On August 10, 2020 at the Health Science Centre in Winnipeg, with Michelle and his Boys by his side Lorne passed away peacefully after a lengthy illness.

Lorne was born January 18, 1948 in Loon Straits Manitoba, one of 10 children to Harry and Elsie Monkman.

Lorne spent his early years in Loon Straits, alongside his brothers and sisters, learning the values of hard work and the lifelong skills of commercial fishing and hunting from his parents. These values he later passed down to his boys. Around the age of 15 the family made the decision to move the family to Victoria Beach, Manitoba. It was there he met and remained lifelong friends with so many.

In the Late 60’s Lorne met and married Alice and were blessed with two boys Kirk and Kirby and settled in the North End of Winnipeg. Lorne made the decision to attend Red River College, where he achieved his Red Seal in Bricklaying. Over many years Lorne made many sacrifices mastering his trade in Northern Alberta and Manitoba, to eventually start and build a successful company that is still strong today. Lorne’s love and knowledge of commercial fishing never left his blood. He spent many years fishing alongside his father and brothers.

In the early 90’s Lorne met Michelle and fell in love. Together they built a house and lived in Libau and later built their dream home in East Selkirk where they lived together until his passing. Dad loved to travel with Michelle. They had the opportunity to travel together to different places around the world. He also always found time to travel with his buddies and sons to far away hunting and fishing trips.

Lorne loved to go to auctions. He always came home with something, and some purchases were questioned, but he always had his reasons for getting them. He always saw the value in everything.

Lorne’s other passion was curling. He spent many years curling with friends, his boys and Michelle. He especially enjoyed making it back to Victoria Beach to curl with and against his old buddies. After the game, win or lose, there were always a lot of laughs and a few beers with his buds.

Lorne was a family man. He loved his brothers and sisters and parents, and would always make time to keep in touch and visit with them. Lorne especially loved and was very proud of his boys, and their families which consisted of 6 grandchildren. He always made sure everyone was doing ok, and loved to visit with them.

Lorne’s heart never left Loon Straits. In the late 90’s Lorne was able to purchase land there, and alongside friends and family, built a cabin and a shop. He always loved to go back to where he grew up and hunt and fish and visit with so many.

Lorne was always known as a “gentle giant” to many in the community. He was very involved in many charities and loved to help out with donations. Lorne was always willing to help people, especially his family. He had a big heart and will be missed by so many.

Lorne is survived by his wife Michelle, his sons Kirk (Rose) and Kirby ( Nasrin); 6 grandchildren Bryson, Soraya, Brandon, Breanna, Erin and Connor. Also, his brothers Gerry, Willie, Ernie, Fred and John; sisters Darlene, Jackie, Diane, Laurel and their spouses.

Due to this terrible time we live in, due to covid-19, the family has made the tough decision to have a grave side interment in Loon Straits and will postpone a Celebration of Lorne’s Life to a future date when it is safer to gather.

The family would like to thank all the Dr.’s, nurses and staff at the Health Science Centre for all the care and compassion they showed in his final days.
