Obituary

Lorraine Mary Smith

(Morningbird Woman)

April 22, 1954 – May 30, 2025

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Lorraine Mary Smith, on the evening of May 30, 2025 at the age of 71. After a long battle with cancer, she passed away peacefully at the Selkirk Hospital surrounded by family.

Lorraine will be missed and remembered by her beloved husband of 50 years, Fred; children Michael (Lloydiene), Michele (Travis), and Melanie (Felix); grandchildren Hayden, Mindy, Kash, and Ave. Lorraine also leaves behind her sisters Verna (Ken), Marlene, Dianne (Rob), and brother Brian (Shannon), as well as many nieces and nephews that she loved and cherished as her own. Lorraine was predeceased by her parents Peter and Doreen Klassen.

After Lorraine’s mother passed at a young age, she took on the role of mother and protector of her four younger siblings. This natural instinct carried with her through her life, caring for everyone like family, with love, compassion, understanding, and empathy. Lorraine’s positive and optimistic mindset was contagious, and could turn anyone’s bad day into a silver lining. Lorraine was a woman of unwavering strength, patience, grace, and kindness, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of all who knew her.

Lorraine loved to be surrounded by family and friends, especially her grandchildren. Just being in their presence, watching them play, learn, and grow brought her such profound joy and happiness.

Lorraine’s faith brought her comfort; her culture brought her pride; her family brought her strength.

Lorraine, you were an amazing Wife, Mother, Daughter, Nana, Aunt, Niece, and friend. We will forever miss your kind heart, calming presence, beautiful smile, and warm hugs. We will keep with us your memory, strength, wisdom, selflessness, generosity, and overwhelming love.

As per Lorraine’s wishes, a private service has been held at the Notre Dame Catholic Church.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to CancerCare Manitoba in her honour.
