Margaret Dalman Obituary

Margaret Dalman

June 5, 1928 – April 6, 2024

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of our mother on Saturday, April 6, 2024, with family by her side, at Lions Personal Care Home, Winnipeg, in her 95th year.

Margaret was born at home on William Avenue in Winnipeg and delivered by her maternal Grandmother. She attended Cecil Rhodes School in Weston until grade 8. It was at that time that her family purchased a farm in Netley, Manitoba to help support themselves when the effects of her father’s Parkinson’s Disease prevented him from working any longer. A bit of a tomboy, Margaret was assigned the outdoor chores while her sister helped their mother inside the house. She took on the care of the cows, horses and chickens, as well as helping to plant and weed the extensive gardens that helped sustain the family. Young Margaret also took on some extra work by helping a trapper with skinning the muskrats he trapped, earning herself a brand new bike. When she was older and had a family and a garden of her own, she said she never wanted to have to pull another weed again.

Margaret and Franklin met when he bid on a pie she’d baked for a pie social in the Netley/Petersfield area, they were married less than a year later and welcomed their first child two years after that. They would welcome five more children in the years that followed. They moved to Winnipeg in 1953, finally purchasing their first home on McKelvey St., just down the street from her sister Ethel’s family home. They moved to Lockport in 1969 and in 1977 decided it was time to return to Netley MB, where they lived until Frank’s passing. They spent their winters in Weslaco, Texas.

Despite only having an 8th-grade education, Margaret took training to be a bookkeeper and worked for a number of Winnipeg companies, where she was valued for her attention to detail and work ethic. Margaret enjoyed reading, knitting and crocheting, a rousing game of cribbage, but especially a challenging crossword puzzle.  She had a wry sense of humour, which was still evident to her children and grandchildren in this last challenging year of her life.

Margaret was predeceased by her husband Franklin Dalman, mother Ethel Rutherford (McCullough, nee Horsfall), father William McCullough, and step-father Johnny Rutherford. She was also predeceased by her sons Franklin William and David Ross Dalman; sister Ethel (Albert Playfoot) and brother William McCullough Jr. (Nel); brothers-in-law Harold (Sheila), Norman (Betty), Gordon (Audrey), Arnold (Grace), and sisters-in-law Evelyn (Gordon Copping), and Corinne (Albert Copping). She is survived by her children Jack (Brenda), Lynne Dalman, Janice (Chris Rarick), and Larry (Bonnie); her grandchildren Kim Duquette (Roy), Shelley Dalman Betts (Don), Arthur Dalman (Katherine), Nick Counanes (Emily), Aiden Counanes, Darcy Dalman (Suzanne), Mariedke Gibson (David), Brad Bjarnason, Jessica Bjarnason, Kylan Kaminski (Samantha), Craig Kaminski (Amber), Brett Dalman (Dale), Mallory Dalman (Andy), Marcy McNally (Mike), Sean McNally, Eric Dalman (Judy), and Franklin Dalman; her dear nieces Carol and Diane; and by 23 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. She is also survived by sister-in-law Victoria (Les Clark).

The family would like to thank those of the staff who went above and beyond to care for Margaret at Lindenwood Manor Assisted Living and the Lions Personal Care Home.

In lieu of flowers, the family invites you to make a donation in Margaret’s memory to Parkinson’s Canada or Diabetes Canada.

A celebration of her life will be held on Thursday, April 11, 2024 at 1:00 p.m. in the Gilbart Funeral Chapel in Selkirk, Manitoba.
