Obituary

Marilyn Etta Hodges

Surrounded by the love of her family and friends, Marilyn Etta Hodges passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 15, 2025, at the Selkirk Regional Health Centre, at the age of 66.

Marilyn was born on October 23, 1959, in Winnipeg, MB, to Etta and John Hodges. She was welcomed into heaven by her parents, grandparents, and many aunts and uncles. She leaves behind her brother, Richard; sister-in-law, Jacqueline; nephews Tristan (Elysia) and Joshua (McKenna); niece Ashtyn; her stepmother Elsie; and Elsie’s family.

Marilyn grew up in Windsor Park (Winnipeg) and later lived in Pilot Mound before moving with Richard’s family to Selkirk in 1999. Marilyn became quite independent, working at Meadowood Manor and Osborne A&W, and was well known for her remarkable ability to travel all over Winnipeg by Transit. She used that independence to stay connected with the people she cared about—her family, her Windsor Park Baptist Church group, and many friends.

In Selkirk, Marilyn found meaningful work and community through Inclusion Selkirk, until the day she decided she was ready for early retirement. Marilyn approached life with a steady determination. Marilyn was known for her crocheting—sometimes ripping things apart and starting over many times. She had a passion for word searches, puzzles, and making lists. A favourite pastime was baking cupcakes and decorating cookies with her Mom and Oma.

Marilyn was able to live independently for many years thanks to the care and kindness of wonderful caregivers, including the late Nellie Cottes and others who supported her along the way. We are forever grateful to Inclusion Selkirk, whose staff walked beside Marilyn for the past 26 years, especially those who cared for her at 322 Dufferin and 501 Christie. Our heartfelt thanks also go to the staff of the Selkirk Regional Health Centre for their compassionate and diligent care of Marilyn.

A celebration of Marilyn’s life will be held on Wednesday, November 26, 2025, at 1:00 p.m. in the Gilbart Funeral Chapel, Selkirk. Because Marilyn loved colour, please feel free to wear your favourite colour in her honour.

Interment will follow in the spring at Turtle River Cemetery, where she will be laid to rest beside her mother and father.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Marilyn’s name may be made to Inclusion Selkirk, 306 Jemima St., Selkirk, MB R1A 1X1.
