Marjory Anderson Obituary

Marjory Anderson

(nee Cheyne)

Marjory Anderson, our beloved Mom, Grandma, and Great-Grandma passed away on June 18, 2022 at the Arborg Personal Care Home. Mom was born in Teulon and grew up in a big loving farm family. The Cheynes were all proud of their Scottish ancestry. Marjory, also known as Molly, attended school in Teulon. Farm life was dear to mom’s heart and she took great pride in showing her calf annually in the 4-H Beef Club. When chores were finished she walked three miles each way to Teulon to play baseball.

Marj married our Dad, Magnus Anderson, in 1952 after meeting him in Folk School. Together they farmed near Riverton for over 50 years, expanding their farm and cattle herd, the last 25 years with their son Tim. Mom’s early years were devoted to their four children, cooking in their lumber camp at Beaver Creek, planting farm shelterbelts, gardening and building a new home in 1967.

Mom was most proud of her children and beloved grandchildren, revelling in their achievements. Mom loved sports (especially baseball and curling), her 25 years as the Riverton Collegiate secretary - even teaching typing, cooking (especially ponnukokur and vinarterta which she also sold), and travels to Scotland, Mexico and throughout Canada. Energetic and hard-working, Mom was always busy - baking, canning, pickling, sewing, knitting, and tole painting (especially bird houses and “Welcome” signs in different languages). She would get excited over berry picking, hockey and card games.

Mom was community minded. She spent several years as a Riverton Co-op Board member, many years as a member of the Lutheran Church Women where she helped publish two cookbooks, organize an annual Mother`s Day Dinner, and coordinate innumerable community showers and funerals. She was a Board member for Riverdale Place Workshop and the Riverton Group Home.

In later years she cherished her flower beds and garden, feeding birds and caring for her dogs Jordy and Danny and authored a book about her lumber camp experiences. She moved to a Personal Care Home in 2016. She will be remembered for her caring attitude and generosity, good humour and smile, energy and work ethic, sense of adventure and competition (skydiving at age 80!) and her loyal friendships.

Marjory was predeceased by husband Magnus in 2005, parents Douglas and Marjory Cheyne, her siblings James (Kay), Charles, Margaret, Stewart (Roxy), Isabel/Nan (Cal Burton), and numerous in-laws.

She is survived by her four children; son Doug (Val), children Trevor (Kristy), Paula (Rob); son Tim (Wanda), children Brett (Chelsea and children Sawyer and Salka), Drew (Brenna); daughter Suzzann (Bill Wright), children Shantih, Katy (James and children Annie, Max, and Grace), Kirsten (Johnny); son Stewart (Pam McWilliams), children Brooke and Quinn (their mother Suzanne Gray), Dagney and Claudia McWilliams; sisters-in-law Elma Cheyne and Valdine (Anton) Peterson; brothers-in-law Lawrence Romaniuk, Martin (Barbara) Anderson and many nieces and nephews.

Marjory’s family thanks the staff of the Arborg Personal Care Home for their care and compassion over the last six years. A celebration of Marjory’s life will be held on Saturday, July 9th at 2:30 p.m. in the Riverton Community Hall. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba, Riverton Cemetery or Riverton Elks.
