Mark R Hofer Obituary

Mark R. Hofer

It is with great sadness to announce the sudden passing of Mark R. Hofer on May 13, 2026. Mark was born on March 18, 1968.

He is survived by his mother, Esther; his brother Richard (Michelle); sister Sandra; nephews, Cameron (Skye), Shane (Anne-Marie), Colton (Anna); nieces Shaelyn (Brian), and Aliya (Tyler); great-nephew Dori; great-niece Claire, and his beloved companion Luna. He is also survived by his uncle Sam and numerous other aunts, uncles, and cherished cousins and friends.

He was predeceased by his father, Herman.

Mark was born in Saskatoon, the son of ex-Hutterites from Greenwald Colony. That culture and heritage remained a vital part of his upbringing and who he became as a man often around the dinner table over a bowl of borscht and kneidel, strunkel soup or Hutterite dumplings. The family moved back to Winnipeg when he was still young and he spent his childhood growing up in Elmwood and East Kildonan surrounded by family while attending the Worldwide Church of God. Time at the church allowed Mark to visit special places across North America and Europe to attend services. That drove Mark's love of travel. He would go anywhere with his family, but also took solo trips to his favourite places in Europe where he could explore and bask in history, roasted meats, good wine and, most importantly, proper beer.

Spending time working as a concrete finisher during the summer and fall, allowed him to pursue many creative hobbies over the winter, like drawing, intricate model shipbuilding, carpentry, wine and beer making, cooking, fishing, hunting, and guitar. Mark was a devoted music enthusiast holding heavy metal and old country closest to his heart. He was passionate about all sports, always cheering for Canada, Austria or Germany, but he was an avid fanatic of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, the Winnipeg Jets, the New York Yankees, the San Diego Chargers, the Nebraska Cornhuskers, and West Ham United FC. Mark adored learning, and loved to read fiction and nonfiction books mostly about Western history and the Second World War. He spent time in southern Texas over the winters driving his parents down to their trailer in McCallum, TX, where he quickly became obsessed with southern and Texas barbecue, which he treasured as an opportunity to feed the ones he loved.

Mark was fiercely loyal and loved his family above all else. They will miss him immeasurably.

A small Celebration of Life will be held privately by the family.
