Marlene Joan Swickis (Maxwell) Obituary

With heavy hearts and great sadness, we announce the sudden passing of a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and dearest friend. With family by her side, on Sunday, July 19th, Marlene Joan Swickis passed away.

Marlene was born in Winnipeg, MB on April 23rd, 1948. Marlene is survived by her husband, Walter Edward Swickis, with whom she cherished 57 years of marriage, and the pinnacle of her love, their three children: Darrell, David, and Tannis(Mick). She and her family enjoyed many years together in Winnipeg and eventually moved to Grand Marais, where she spent what she would refer to as the happiest chapter of her life.

Following a rewarding career in health care, Marlene took a well-deserved early retirement. Rather than slowing down, she poured her heart into her greatest joy, her seven grandchildren: Chelsea (Micheal), Declan(Cali), Codey (Gabby), Travis, Jade (Scott), April (Hayden), and Rose, and her two great-grandchildren, River and Leif. Her grandchildren would tell you that she tended the garden that shaped them, she filled it with laughter and a sense of wonder for the world, watching each one flourish in whatever path they chose. They will remember her for her unconditional love, her loyalty to nature and its delicacies, her delightful knack for antiques and garage sales, her astonishing taste in jewelry, and the way she made Christmas feel magical; a season she loved with childlike joy and wonder.

Marlene's hands were rarely still. An exceptionally talented quilter, she had an extraordinary gift for seeing beauty in every piece of fabric, stitching together countless quilts with remarkable patience and creativity. Every quilt she made became a treasured keepsake, carrying with it, a piece of her heart. Alongside her passion for sewing, she possessed an unmatched green thumb. Rain or shine, Marlene made sure she had the most ravishing garden in the community, blooming with vibrant colors that reflect the love she gave to everything she touched.

She had a rare ability to make everyone feel welcome, heard, and cared for. Her gentle spirit, generous heart, and quiet wisdom left an imprint on everyone fortunate enough to know her. She will be deeply missed, forever loved, and never forgotten. She made the world brighter just by being in it and the family would like to extend thanks to the staff at Selkirk Regional Health Centre for their care and efforts.
