Marvin Terhoch Obituary

Marvin Terhoch

February 4, 1947 – January 19, 2019

On Saturday, the 19th of January, with the sun shining on him and surrounded by people he loved, Marv died at the age of 71 at his home in Lockport. He was loved and will be missed by his family: his wife and best friend of over 50 years, Sherry; his four children and their spouses, Marshall and Sherry-Lee, Andrew and Jodi, Iain, Erin and Jim. Marv’s true sources of pure joy were his grandchildren; Jocelyn, Emma and Nate will miss their Zaide, whose greatest gift to them was that they’d never have to doubt just how much he loved them. Marv will also be missed by his brother, and best friend, Len and sister-in-law Liz, his sister-in-law Martha, his brother-in-law Martin and Martin’s wife Donna. Uncle Marv to his nephews and nieces, he will be missed by Jordan, Daniel (Lianne), Evan (Krissy), Mira (Mark), Sierra, and Sasha, and great nieces Shyla and Sadie. Predeceased by his sister Cheryl, parents Pearl and Kurt, in-laws Walter and Joan, and his brother-in-law Paul. We imagine they’re kibitzing together again. Marv was born February 4, 1947 and grew up on Rupertsland Avenue, and it was during that time he developed relationships with cousins that would last a lifetime. He loved his cousins, near and far, and we know they will miss his big smile and giant hugs. He was blessed to have amazing aunties and uncles, both by blood and by chance, surround him throughout his life. Marv is survived by his Auntie Rochelle and Uncle Sheldon, and his Auntie Pearl. Some of Marv’s best friends were a part of his childhood, and his high school years. He would continue to develop meaningful friendships throughout his life. He was protective of his friends, and valued his closest friendships immensely. Marv’s family can’t thank his friends and our family enough for all that they have done for us during these past few months. A champion of the music and arts scene in Winnipeg, Marv was proud of, and humble about, the work he did to promote Winnipeg to the world. His passion spilled over into social issues, and he devoted so much of his time to food banks and raising awareness of the food security crisis in Canada. Marv’s happiest times in life were with Sherry, his children, and his grandchildren, at his favourite place on earth, the house in Lockport. For over 41 years their house has been a meeting place; the door always open and an ear always ready to listen if you needed it. Although Marv and Sherry raised four children of their own, dozens of their children’s friends saw Marv as a father figure, and we know they will miss Mr. T immensely. Marv chose to be cremated, and his family asks you to join them for a come-and-go celebration of his life on Saturday, January 26th from 2:00 – 5:00 p.m. (program at 2:30 p.m.) at Gilbart Funeral Home, 309 Eveline Street, Selkirk, MB. In keeping with his wishes, please bring a food item or donation for the Selkirk Food Bank. Alternately, donations in Marv’s memory may be mailed to 310 Christie Avenue, Selkirk, MB, R1A 0T8, or to a charity of your choice. Condolences, photos or videos may be left on his tribute wall at www.gilbartfuneralhome.com. A heartfelt thank you from his family for the care Marv received from Dr. John Rabson, Dr. Trevor Meredeth, the ACCU staff at St. Boniface Hospital, the staff at the Selkirk General Hospital, the health care aides who cared for Marv at home, and palliative care nurse Melanie Bernas. Your kindness will never be forgotten. Gilbart Funeral Home, Selkirk, in care of arrangements.
