Michael Donald Flynn
His Wit Lifted Our Hearts, His Love Was Our True North, His Smile Lives On
Michael Donald Flynn, 70, of Selkirk, Manitoba, left this world on December 1, 2025, surrounded by love at Selkirk Regional Health Centre. Though his time on earth has ended, the echoes of his laughter, his kindness, and his stories will continue to travel through the lives he touched.
Born on March 15, 1955, in the town he would forever call home, Mike grew up beneath prairie skies that seemed as boundless as his imagination. His childhood was one of open roads and shared adventures—playing with his siblings, roaming the neighbourhood with friends, and pouring his heart into every sport he could get his hands on. Golf, baseball, skiing, hockey—each became a chapter in the story of a boy who loved to play. He carried immense pride in competing in Golf Junior Tournaments and in being coached by his greatest role model—his father—on the Dodgers baseball team.
As Mike ventured into adulthood, the world around him grew, and so did his capacity to love. The passions that shaped his early years became gifts he passed along to his children. He coached their teams, tended to their dreams, and filled their days with the kind of memories that linger warmly for a lifetime. He sped beside them on the outdoor rink, curled through winter evenings, played hockey with the Channel Cats under rink lights, and cherished Saturdays uptown for slow coffee and quick smiles. Nights were spent gathered around the glow of Hockey Night in Canada with Teri and the kids—simple moments that felt like home.
He followed his father’s footsteps into Sales, building a respected career with Goodall, Safety Company and G&S. He found joy in connecting with his community through work at Thors Meats and by managing the Grrrumpys location in Gimli. Wherever Mike went, he brought with him a spirit that made strangers feel like neighbours and neighbours feel like friends.
In his later years, Mike seemed to move through life with a kind of quiet reverence. He sang as he strummed his guitar, steered his sports car through winding roads, sipped coffee on the backyard deck while nature unfolded around him, spent Wednesday or Friday nights at the bowling lanes, lounged at Maureen and John’s, biked through town, and never missed the chance for a good story or a better party. His joy was generous. His presence, grounding.
Mike will be remembered for many things: his sharp wit that could turn an ordinary moment into an unforgettable one; his generosity that arrived exactly when it was needed; his talent for naming things—like his sister’s newspaper column, View from the Crow’s Nest; and his limitless store of random facts that he shared with the timing of a natural storyteller.
He honoured tradition and built new ones of his own. He founded the Flynn Fall Classic Golf Tournament in tribute to his father and created the Louis Riel Day Classic—gatherings meant not only for sport, but for togetherness, laughter, and memory-making.
To those who loved him, Mike will forever be a legend—one of the funniest souls we were blessed to know. His humour was its own kind of magic: it soothed, surprised, and brought people together. No one could make others laugh the way he did, and that spark will remain with us long after the sound of his laughter fades.
Mike is survived by his children, Rory and Koren; his grandchildren, Kivah, Jasper, Justus, Josh, and Brody; his mother, Mary Ellen; siblings Bridget (Don), Maureen (John), and Mark (Brittney), mother of his children (Teri); and countless extended family members and friends who loved him dearly. He joins his father, Donald Flynn, whose legacy he carried with pride.
Cremation has taken place and no formal service will be held at this time.
