Obituary

Olan Isfeld

Olan Isfeld passed away March 23, 2025, predeceased by her husband Paul, grandson Arthur, sisters Gerdur, Emma, Alda and brother Oli. She leaves to mourn; her children Lana (Barry), Paulette, Sandy (Marianne); 7 grandchildren Rhett (Holly), Russell, Hayley (Jamie), Trisha, Brandon (Alora), Ryan (Alivia) and Carly (Josh); 9 great grandchildren Daniel, Hannah, Drew, Lilija, Tristen, River, Brooke, Cali and Aila, and sister Dilla.

Olan was born July 8, 1935, to Elli and Runa Narfason, youngest in family with 4 sisters and 1 brother. She grew up at Vidirvodur in the Minerva District. While attending Gimli High School she met Paul at a dance and history was made. Paul and Olan married in 1952, lived in Winnipeg for a short time then moved to Winnipeg Beach where they went on to complete their family.

Olan held the traditional role of wife and mother but she also worked for Canada Post for a number of years, taught piano and joined the United Church where she served on many committees and boards and additionally played the organ every week.

Olan was known to be stalwart and dedicated to her family, church and community. She was attune to the complexities of organizing upcoming events, meetings and impromptu occasions. Olan held a keen interest in politics, world events and always watched the 3 networks of the evening news. Paul and Olan’s home was the hub of our family and extended families and was host to bridal showers, birthdays, anniversaries and momentous occasions alongside the holiday get togethers. Mom was never phased by the upcoming work and duties of the different seasons (fishing, planting, harvesting, canning, cooking and baking the traditional dishes).

Mom enjoyed her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren immensely and made special dishes for us to enjoy along with going swimming, mini golf, Boardwalk Days and Islendingaoagurinn.

Mom was a fantastic planner and this was proven by the 35 years of vacationing in Hawaii, booking flights, visiting with extended family whilst waiting for a connecting flight. Paul and Olan also made yearly trips to Minnesota until the late 1990’s. Olan did travel to Iceland in 2010, with 2 of her sisters and 3 nieces.

Mom you will be sorely missed by all of your family but we do know you have reunited with Dad and Arthur.

Goda Nott Modir, Amma

A memorial service and celebration of Olan’s life will be held on Monday May 19, 2025 at 1:00 p.m. at the Gilbart Funeral Chapel, 50 1st Avenue Gimli, Manitoba.
