Percy George Polenski
March 15, 1943 – February 18, 2021
It is with great sorrow and sadness that we announce the passing of Percy Polenski. Percy is survived by his beloved partner, Linda, his sister Martha Fewchuk, brother, Wilf (Myrtle) and sister Sharon Lloyd, his children Troy, Chad and Cherie, his grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents, George and Anna, brothers-in-law Nick Fewchuk and Reg Lloyd, nephew, Garry Fewchuk, and niece, Goldie Maliszewsky.
Percy was a very hard worker helping his parents and siblings on the farm. His career took him to work at Furnasman and then later he started his passion for driving. As a bus driver, he worked for Beaver Bus lines, Grey Goose, Circle Tours, Grey Hound and Exclusive. Besides his regular runs to Thunder Bay, Flin Flon and Thompson, he also enjoyed taking people on chartered bus tours.
After retirement, he drove two years for the Winnipeg Goldeyes giving them as hard a time as they gave him.
He had the opportunity to visit every state in the US except Hawaii, and every Canadian province including a trip to the Arctic Circle. He was incredibly knowledgeable of the various areas he travelled to. He was honoured with a number of awards including One (and Two) Million Miles Accident Free and runner up for Driver of the Year.
Linda was on a bus trip to Nashville with her cousin Hope when Percy met Linda. They spent 38 years together and enjoyed travelling to Mexico, Cuba and many parts of the States with friends, Norma and Jack and Edna and Bill. Casinos were never far away.
Towards the end, it was difficult to see Percy unable to continue his love for driving. He missed it terribly, but was very good at keeping contact with the many drivers he worked with.
Percy struggled with his cancer (multiple myeloma) for ten years. He fought hard, especially the last six months, but the cancer won out.
Percy will always be remembered for his sense of humour, his generosity and kindness.
Many thanks go out to Dr. Dao, CancerCare, Palliative Care, Tamara, Keltie, family and friends for their care and support through these difficult times.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to CancerCare or the charity of one’s choice.
A private funeral service will be held on Thursday, February 25 at 11:00 a.m. The service will be livestreamed via the link https://youtu.be/3p-1GQjJdH8.
Dear Percy, may you rest in peace.
Life is a journey of sweetness and sorrow,
Of yesterday’s memories and hopes for tomorrow.
Of pathways we choose and detours we face
With patience and humor, courage and grace,
Of joys that we’ve shared and of people we’ve met
Who have touched us in ways we will never forget.
Condolences may be left on his tribute wall at www.gilbartfuneralhome.
Gilbart Funeral Home, Selkirk in care of arrangements.
