Robert (Bob) German Obituary

Robert John German, age 78, of Selkirk, Manitoba, passed peacefully on Sunday, February 18, 2024, at the Health Science Centre in Winnipeg. To his mother Mary, he was Bobby and to the rest of us he was Bob.

Bob was born on August 2, 1945, in Warroad, Minnesota, as it was the closest hospital to Tolstoi, Manitoba, where Bob spent his early childhood. As a young man, Bob was fascinated with all things mechanical, and he learned his way around a gas combustion engine from his dad John German. As a career heavy duty mechanic at Manitoba Hydro, Bob often mentored young mechanics. Anyone who knew him knew that all they had to do was “ask Bob” if they had an unsolvable problem around in the garage.

As a young man working odd jobs, Bob worked at a riding academy caring for horses and taking friends out for rides through the fields of West St. Paul and into Winnipeg for lunch. Bob met his wife Georgina La Peyre in 1963 at the riding academy and they wed in 1965.

Anyone who knew Bob in the 1970’s and 80’s knew that at the German farm the milk was fresh daily, the beef was grass fed and 100% natural and hay season was when Bob was most at home. It was on the farm that Bob raised his three sons, managed the farm and a small side business repairing just about anything mechanical that he could get his hands on. Teaching his boys to be handy, they knew that dad was happy or proud of them when they heard him say "good man".

In retirement, Bob spent his time caring for his beloved pets, helping his children with home renovation projects and spending time with his grandchildren who called him Pop. Bob was a patient listener and always had time to talk to his family and friends who would often call to ask Bob for advice on their own projects.

Preceded in death by his parents John and Mary German; siblings Ann Boyko, Paul German, Bonnie Hutchings and John German; and his son Kyle Robert German. Bob is survived by his wife of 59 years Gina German; son Craig German; daughter-in-law Kathleen German; grandsons Jaxon and Kole German; son Brian German; grandsons Benjamin and Nolan German; daughter-in-law Rhonda (Tanner German) Hawthorne; son-in-law John Hawthorne; grandsons Jesse and Jake Hawthorne; and his sister Luba “Lovie” Anderson.

In lieu of flowers please send a donation in his name to the Winnipeg Humane Society. The family would like to take this time to thank the doctors and staff at HSC on GD5 for their compassionate care.

A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, March 16th, at 11:00 a.m. in the Gilbart Funeral Chapel in Selkirk, MB.
