Obituary

STEPHANIA (STEPHIE) HYKAWY

August 3, 1928 - June 5, 2025

It is with heavy hearts that the family shares with you the passing of our beloved Mom, Baba, Great Baba and Great Great Baba, Stephie Hykawy. Mom passed peacefully with family by her side on June 5, 2025 at Betel Personal Care Home in Gimli.
She was predeceased by her parents, Joseph and Margaret Kravetz, husband Jim, and brother John Kravetz.
Mom will be missed and forever remembered by her children, Pat (Reg) Johnson, Bob (Shelly), John (Judi) and Kathy (Dar). She was a cherished Baba to her grandchildren Rob (Kim), Sean (Danielle), Nikki (Mark), Jamie (Ken), Corey, Brooke (Joel), Nicole (Kurt) and Melanie. A proud Great Baba to her great-grandchildren Emily, Nicholas, Ethan, Olivia, Abi, Becca, Bailee Jai, Quinn, Joelly, Mykah, Ayla, Jack, Mason, Levi, Thomas and Edie, and a Great Great Baba to Jocelyn and Deegan. Mom was also survived by her sister Eileen Dudzic, her twin sister Anne Firman and her brother Bill Kravetz.
Mom was born on August 3, 1928 in Foley, Manitoba, where she grew up on the family farm. She met Dad (who also lived in the area) and they married on October 12, 1946. They lived in Winnipeg for a short time, returning back to the Gimli area where they raised their 4 kids.  Mom worked all of her life as a seamstress, sewing for most of Gimli! She opened her own blind and drapery company, Stephie’s Draperies. She had a natural born talent and sewed right until she was 94!
Mom’s Ukrainian heritage and her faith were the cornerstones of her life. She was an active member of the Sacred Heart Church, from helping to build the church in 1958 to making perogies for fundraising as late as a couple of years ago! She was on the Church Council and sat as President of the Auxiliary for a number of years. Mom had many interests and was very active in the community. She curled into her 80’s, loved to play horseshoes, cards, bingo and her casino visits. Mom was an avid gardener and took great pride in her home, flowerbeds and yard. She loved cooking for the family. Ukrainian Christmas and Easter were especially sacred to her, not only for the spiritual meaning but for the tradition they carried. The aroma of her cooking filled the kitchen during the holidays.
Mom loved her town and sat on numerous committees over the years including the Hospital Auxiliary and the Heritage Committee. She was instrumental in having the St. Michael’s Church in Foley declared a Heritage Site. Mom received many recognitions and awards, her most recent being the Ukrainian Canadian Congress, Manitoba Provincial Council 150 Award.
Special thanks to everyone at Betel in Gimli for the love and care you provided for Mom. Also to Dr. Ade for his caring and support.
Prayers will be said on Sunday, June 15, 2025 at 6:30 p.m. in the Sacred Heart Ukrainian Catholic Church in Gimli, MB. Funeral Liturgy will be held on Monday, June 16, 2025 at 10:30 a.m. also in the Church.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Sacred Heart Memorial Fund c/o Sacred Heart Church in Gimli, Manitoba
Thank you Mom for your unconditional love and your strength through the years. Miss you and love you forever.
