It is with sadness that the family announces the passing of Verna Sakai (nee Walaschuk) on June 30, 2026, at the age of 88 years.

Verna was born on January 25,1938, in Winnipeg and was raised in Selkirk. She graduated as a Registered Nurse from St.Boniface Hospital and dedicated many years of her life to caring for others. Throughout her nursing career, she worked in various hospitals and nursing homes, where her kindness,compassion, and commitment to her patients were deeply appreciated.

In the late eighties, Verna retired to Arnes, MB., where she enjoyed the rural life surrounded by many friends and neighbours. She found great joy in gardening, crafting and going to the movies. An avid reader, Verna was always happiest when spending time with those she loved.The thoughtful birthday and Christmas presents given by her to her loved ones, always so beautifully wrapped, were a highlight of many family celebrations.

Verna was predeceased by her parents, Isabel and Walter; her brother John; her niece Brenda Morrow; and her nephews,Greg and Brent Jonson.

She leaves to mourn her sisters, Isabel, Pat (Alan) and Carol (Jon); her brother, Walter (Diane); as well as her many nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews.

She had a special relationship with her nieces and nephews and they adored their “ Auntie Bun”.

She will be missed by her friend Rhonda of Betel Home and lovingly remembered by all whose lives she touched.

The family extends sincere thanks to all the staff at Betel Home for their compassionate care and support they provided for Verna the past year and a half.

Thank you to her loving brother Walter who was always there for her. Also to niece Lisa for her care and kindness.

We wish to express our sincere gratitude to Gilbart Funeral Home for their care and guidance during this difficult time.

Cremation has taken place and a private family service will be held at a later date.
